Matchup to Watch: Indiana’s Buy In vs. Michigan State’s Buy In

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)
The Indiana Hoosiers and Michigan State Spartans will battle for the Old Brass Spittoon on Saturday in Bloomington. Both teams entered the 2023 season with bowl hopes, but August seems like it was lightyears ago. The Hoosiers fell to 3-7 after a 48-45 loss to Illinois and head coach Tom Allen’s name is starting to show up on hot seat lists while the Spartans already have their coaching search underway after Mel Tucker was fired mid-season. They are also 3-7 and out of bowl contention. So which team will be bought in the most for this unique trophy game?

The Indiana Football team displayed tremendous fight and love for each other during the second half of the Hoosier’s upset win over Michigan State. They came into the game 10.5-point underdogs and left the field after the first half down 24-7. Whatever Tom Allen said in the locker room worked and it rallied the troops to tie the score leading to a crazy overtime.

Turnovers Kill Hoosiers Upset Bid in Spittoon Game

The Hoosiers played their fourth top 10 opponent in six weeks as the Michigan State Spartans came to town. The Spartans tough defense was stout against the reevaluated Hoosiers offense as they won 20-15.
Jack Tuttle received the start at quarterback after Michael Penix went down against Penn State. Tuttle struggled mightily throughout the game. He threw two interceptions, one was returned for a touchdown and the other one also resulted in a Michigan State touchdown.

When: Saturday, October 16 at Noon on FS1

Series History: Michigan State and Indiana battle for the Old Brass Spittoon but the series is one that has been dominated by the Spartans. MSU has won 48 of the 67 contests with IU only being victorious 17 times (there have been two ties). Last season was one of the Hoosiers more comprehensive wins over the Spartans as they dominated 24-0 in East Lansing. Now in his second-year, Mel Tucker infused the roster with several transfers and this will be a much different squad than the one IU beat a season ago.
