Hoosiers Bounce Back Against Penn State in Historic Fashion

Following a road loss to Minnesota and a loss to Louisville in Indianapolis last week, the Hoosiers appeared as though they were beginning to falter. Indiana was in desperate need of a strong performance to get their confidence back up heading into the bulk of the schedule. They did so in historic fashion on Tuesday.

Why They Played: The Hoosiers and Cardinals played the first of what was supposed to be a three-game series. IU had withdrawn from the last two games earlier in the week.
What The Game Meant: This was the first of seven “toss-up” games on IU’s schedule. A win could have pumped some life into the fan base and given the team more momentum heading into the end of September. The loss was deflating, but there are still six of those toss-ups left.

Absent playmaking defensive back Nic Toomer, the Hoosiers strolled into Indianapolis, Indiana for their third game of the season against the Louisville Cardinals.
The first half saw multiple miscues in the Hoosiers’ secondary. Philip Dunnam allowed a 43-yard completion to Jamari Thrash in the first quarter, which began a sequence of missed coverages by the Hoosiers.

The Indiana Hoosiers (1-2) and Louisville Cardinals (3-0) met at Lucas Oil Stadium in front of a split crowd. Despite a second half comeback by the Hoosiers, Jeff Brohm’s Cardinals hung on for a 21-14 victory to stay unbeaten on the young season and winning the first meeting between the two schools since 1986. It was a tale of two halves with Louisville dominating the second half and then needing a goal line stand to survive a Hoosier surge late.
