Needing More: Hoosier Wideouts Look to Step Up

Written by T.J. Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)
The 2018 season was a frustrating one for Indiana football. There were several positives but things did not quite click and IU came up just short of a bowl game. One of the primary reasons for that was a lack of production and explosion in the passing game. The Hoosiers did not have a receiver with more than 46 catches (Luke Timian led the way with 46) and no IU player was able to average even 50 yards receiving per contest. The Hoosiers have turned to a new offensive coordinator with hopes of igniting the offensive attack, the quarterback room is talented and there are a number of wide receivers ready to prove they can get the job done.
Spring Scrimmage (Practice no. 9) Observations and Quotes

It was scrimmage day on a gloomy day in Bloomington and while it was raining outside, the competition was heating up inside Mellencamp Pavilion. No score was kept in the scrimmage, but the defense clearly came out on top.

Spring Practice Day Three Notables
The Hoosiers were back on the practice field on a day that felt more suited for skiing than spring football. However, it was toasty inside the Mellencamp Pavilion as the Hoosiers put on the shoulder pads for the first time this spring. Here are my observations as well as quotes from players and coaches.
Spring Practice Starts in Twelve Days, Here is What You Need to Know About IUFB as They Transition into 2019

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)
The Indiana Hoosiers will open their 2019 spring practice session on March 2nd and wrap up with their annual Cream and Crimson game on Friday April 12th. IU is coming off of frustrating back-to-back 5-7 seasons. Tom Allen is entering his third spring as Indiana’s head coach after taking over the helm prior to the Foster Farms Bowl in 2016. His record sits at 10-15 and 4-14 in conference.
The Hoosiers enter spring practice with some recruiting momentum as Allen and his staff inked one of the best classes, if not the best, in school history. However, the Hoosiers also come with plenty of uncertainty.
Over the next couple of weeks HoosierHuddle.com will preview positions, players who may fly under the radar and much more from spring practice, but for right now here are the items surrounding spring ball to watch.
What Will Indiana’s Offensive Identity be Under New Coordinator Kalen DeBoer?

Witten by Evan McShane
Tom Allen got his guy when he hired Kalen DeBoer as Indiana’s new offensive coordinator. DeBoer has worked his way up the college football ladder and experienced success at multiple levels. Similar to Allen’s track record as a defensive coordinator, DeBoer has a history of successfully turning around several offensive units in a short amount of time. He also prides himself on going beyond football in terms of his coaching duties. “It’s about the relationships that you can have with young men and giving them the greatest experience, they can have in their life or one of the greatest experiences,” DeBoer told reporters, “and that’s why I coach.” Kalen DeBoer is now, in Allen’s words, the Hoosiers’ head coach of the offense.
Allen on Deboer Hiring: ‘I Wanted to Find Myself on Offense’

Mike DeBord, Indiana’s former offensive coordinator, notified Tom Allen that he would be stepping away from the Indiana University coaching staff. After a couple seasons of floundering offensive football and back-to-back missed bowl games, Allen was faced with the most important hire of his tenure.

Indiana Officially Announces Kalen DeBoer Hired as Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator

IU Athletics Release
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head football coach Tom Allen announced today the hiring of Kalen DeBoer as associate head coach and offensive coordinator. A three-time national champion head coach at the University of Sioux Falls (2006, 2008-09) and veteran play-caller of 19 years, DeBoer comes to Bloomington after stints as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Fresno State University (2017-18), and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Michigan University (2014-16).
Fresno to Bloomington: How Does New OC DeBoer Fit at IU?

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)
After the retirement of Mike DeBord, Indiana head football coach Tom Allen was faced with one of the more important hires of his professional career. The offense sputtered for two seasons under the veteran play caller, producing some nice games mixed in with frustrating overall results. While things were somewhat hampered by quarterback personnel, the lack of aggression on offense left a lot to be desired. Now, after two straight seasons of missing a bowl game, the success or failure of this hire may go a long way toward determining how Tom Allen’s tenure is to play out in Bloomington.
