Tight End Danny Friend Moving to Tackle to Bolster O-Line Depth

Redshirt senior Danny Friend has been one of the best blocking tight ends in Indiana history as he has helped pave the way for three 1,000-yard rushers over the last two seasons. Friend, who is coming off postseason surgery, will now be asked to help bolster an offensive line that needs some depth at the tackle position. Friend has been working with the offensive line over the last couple of practices this week.

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Tight Ends

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Tight Ends

Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

The tight ends at Indiana caught 10 total passes and their usage, or lack there of, drove Hoosier fans insane. The good news is that Tom Allen brought in Mike DeBord whose tight ends caught a combined 45 passes at Tennessee last season. The talent at the position is not the problem. IU will have five good ones entering spring practice and another joining the squad when the freshmen arrive on campus. Could this deep, but under utilized group be the answer to some of IU’s offensive woes that flared in 2016?

Matchup To Watch: Indiana's Danny Friend vs. Maryland's Jermaine Carter Jr.

Written By Alex Compton

Indiana is in the midst of a free-fall, and is desperately in need of a win. A loss against Maryland on Saturday brings IU’s bowl eligibility in to question, but a win keeps IU on track. Indiana has had some slow starts lately, and a major key to getting a win will be to get the offense in some sort of a rhythm early in order to avoid the defense being out on the field a ton in the first quarter.

2016 Tight Ends Preview: Surrounded by Stars, Hoosier Tight Ends Fly Under the Radar

2016 Tight Ends Preview: Surrounded by Stars, Hoosier Tight Ends Fly Under the Radar

Our position previews continue today as we take a look at an often overlooked but critical group for IU’s offense: tight end. IU’s tight end coach James Patton knows what good linemen and tight ends look like. He coached with Kevin Johns at Northwestern and worked with Kevin Wilson at Oklahoma. Patton oversaw a line that featured a total of five All-Americans and future NFL draft picks. He’s been at IU for four seasons and works as the tight end, fullbacks and offensive recruiting coordinator. While they may not have been stars in college, recent IU tight ends like Ted Bolser, Anthony Corsaro and Michael Cooper have been valuable members of some of the Big Ten’s best offenses. Tight ends aren’t just responsible for receiving and they aren’t used only as extra run blockers. Rather, the position requires flexibility and versatility. It requires strength along with quickness. Or toughness mixed with great hands. The Hoosiers have to replace the underrated Michael Cooper but the six guys that remain hope to form a strong group that can help IU’s attack remain at the top of the Big Ten.

2016 Spring Preview: Tight Ends

The tight end position was a major key to the success the Hoosiers had on offense in 2015, despite injuries and moving tackle Brandon Knight to tight end for the majority of the season. Indiana will enter spring practice with three healthy tight ends in Danny Friend, Jordan Fuchs, and Austin Dorris. IU will have to replace the production of Michael Cooper (17 catches, 205 yards, 2 TDs) and Anthony Corsoro (10 catches 142 yards) on and off the field.

Countdown to Kickoff 84 Days (Danny Friend)

Written By: Nick Holmes (@HoosierHolmes)

We are just 12 weeks or 84 days away until the Hoosiers take the field to battle the Salukis of Southern Illinois. Today we take a look at redshirt sophomore tight end Danny Friend.

During his first season with the Hoosiers he saw action in all 12 games, primarily on special teams. Going into the 2014 season Indiana was looking to replace one of its most prolific pass catchers at tight end, Ted Bolser, and there was some hope that Friend could help make up for some of the lost production.
