BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana sophomore running back Steve Scott III is a preseason candidate for the 2019 Doak Walker Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced on Wednesday afternoon. The Forum annually presents the award to the nation's top college running back.
On Monday, Scott was named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, given to America's College Player of the Year.
Scott became the 13th Hoosier (19th time) to reach 1,000 yards in a single season and finished 14th overall in program history with 1,137 yards. The Syracuse, N.Y., native set IU true freshman records in yardage, attempts (228), touchdowns (10) and 100-yard games (6).
Amongst true freshmen running backs nationally, Scott ranked second in yardage, 100-yard games and attempts, and third in rushing TDs. He averaged 101.9 all-purpose yards per game, 94.8 rushing yards per game and 5.0 yards per carry to go along with 16 receptions for 86 yards and one score.
The 6-2, 233-pounder finished fourth in the Big Ten in attempts per game (19.0, 23rd nationally), tied for fourth in rushing touchdowns, fifth in rushing yardage (33rd) and rushing yardage per game (27th), eighth in all-purpose yardage (1,223), tied for eighth in total TDs (11) and 10th in all-purpose yardage per game.
Indiana's Offensive Newcomer of the Year also earned honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades and Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors twice.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name 10 semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced on Nov. 20. The committee will cast a second vote beginning Dec. 2 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2019 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 12 on ESPN.
The award, which will name its 30th recipient in 2019, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
Scott and the Hoosiers open the 2019 campaign with a noon ET kickoff against Ball State at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 31.
Tickets for IU's six home games are available by clicking here, by phone at 1-866-IUSPORTS or in person at the Assembly Hall Ticket Office. IU will welcome Eastern Illinois (Sept. 7), Ohio State (Sept. 14), Connecticut (Sept. 21), Rutgers (Oct. 12 – Homecoming), Northwestern (Nov. 2) and Michigan (Nov. 23) to Memorial Stadium.
