Hoosier Nation held it’s collective breath when freshman quarterback Michael Penix was helped off the field in the third quarter of Indiana’s 33-28 loss to Penn State Saturday. Today, head coach Tom Allen announced that Penix will miss the remainder of the 2018 season because of a torn ACL.

Allen is targeting a June 1st date for Penix to be 100 percent and has enlisted wide receiver J-Shun Harris to help guide the freshman through this process. Harris has torn an ACL three times in his career at IU, so he knows the process. Allen also said that “the goal is to have (Penix) ready for spring, so he can play seven-on-seven.”

Penix played in three games this season and preserves his redshirt. In those three games he completed 21-of-34 passes (61.8%) for 219 yards and a touchdown. He also added 45 yards on six rushes.

Indiana will continue to start Peyton Ramsey and move the dynamic Reese Taylor into the backup quarterback role. Taylor won Indiana Mr. Football as a quarterback at Ben Davis (Ind.) last year. Taylor has 281 all-purpose yards this season and has played on both sides of the ball.

The Hoosiers, now 4-4, take on Minnesota on Friday night at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis
