The Indiana Hoosiers filled a position of need with a big time transfer when former five-star recruit and USC running back Stephen Carr committed to the Hoosiers on Sunday. Carr entered the transfer portal in May and was immediately linked to IU because of his connection with running backs coach Deland McCulllough.

Carr played in 35 games at USC with six starts. In his career, Carr has run for 1,329 yards on 264 carries (5.0 avg) with 12 TDs, caught 57 passes for 421 yards (7.4 avg) with 1 TD, returned 15 kickoffs for 321 yards (21.4 avg). He earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 in 2017 as a freshman. Carr was last listed at six-foot and 215 pounds on the USC roster.

The Hoosiers need some reinforcements in the running backs room after Stevie Scott left early to go pro. Former four-star recruit Sampson James missed most of the spring with an injury, which left Tim Baldwin and a couple walk-ons, Davion Ervin-Pointdexter and Charlie Spiegel, fighting for carries. Carr would add some clout to the room and create competition at the top of the depth chart.

The Hoosiers also have two signees who are slated to join the running backs room in the summer in Trenton Howland and David Holloman. However, Howland had an ACL injury in October and is likely a redshirt candidate.

Carr has one year of eligibility left and would be a nice bridge to the future for the IU running backs. Hoosier Huddle’s T.J. Inman wrote about how Carr would fit at IU earlier last week.
