Last season, Devon Matthews was often the forgotten piece at the safety position. Matthews had a very solid season but was outshined by star safety Jamar Johnson. With Johnson now headed to the NFL, Matthews has the opportunity to take his role both on the field and in the locker room.

“I think I stepped up more last year, being more vocal. This year, I’m even stepping it up a notch. Taking it up another notch. Just Talking more really and communicating more.” Said Matthews.

Matthews, who earned the nickname “Monster” as an 8-year old defensive end when he knocked a quarterback’s helmet off on a sack, was voted to the Third-team All-Big Ten last season. He ended the year with 40 tackles, two of them for losses, six pass breakups, one interception and one sack.

“Monster” is now one of the more experienced players on the defense. Heading into his senior season, Matthews has appeared in 30 games for the Hoosiers, and has started in 14 of them. The experience and continuity of the defense has made it comfortable for Matthews to adapt to a leadership role.

“I’ve been here for four years. This is going to be my fourth year, and I’ve been playing since my freshman year,” Said Matthews, “So, I feel more comfortable about that. Getting on my teammates more as well. So, it’s really just experience.”

One of the main responsibilities of being a leader is to make sure everyone on the defense is on the same page. Matthews has helped fellow defensive back Raheem Layne with his transition to cornerback.

“After practice, we either go to his house or mine and we watch film together. So, our chemistry is definitely up there. We’re going to be good for the season.” Said Matthews.

So far this spring Matthews has taken it upon himself to be that anchor of the defense. If that transfers over to the field and “Monster” has a Monster year, then the Hoosiers could replicate the same magic from last season.
