Now just 12 days until Indiana begins the seasons and their quest to breakthrough truly begins. Today we take a closer look at a defensive back in Jayme Thompson.

#12

JAYME THOMPSON (REDSHIRT SENIOR)

Height: 62’’

Weight: 195 pounds

Hometown: Toledo, Ohio

Position: Defensive back

Indiana touts one of the more impressive secondaries in the Big Ten. Between quite possibly the Big Ten’s best corner in Rashard Fant, some great up and comers like Marcelino Ball and A’shon Riggins and seasoned veterans like Jonathan Crawford, Indiana’s last line of defense should be a good one. Regardless of the talent though every team needs depth at every position to be successful and that’s what Jayme Thompson will provide.

Listed as the number two on the depth chart in the husky position behind Marcelino Ball, Thompson is a redshirt senior, but entering just his second year as a Hoosier. Thompson originally committed to Ohio State after being dubbed a 4-star prospect and was ranked as a top 250 prospect in the nation while at Central Catholic High School in Ohio. Unfortunately Thompson’s Ohio State career ended before it even got started. Thompson suffered an injury that forced him to take a redshirt season in 2013. After the season he decided to leave the program and try his hand at the Junior College level.

Thompson enrolled at Iowa Western Community College and stayed on a number of division one school’s radars. He was rated the number two JUCO safety by 247Sports. He had a big 2014 season amassing 81 tackles, two interceptions and four pass breakups, immediately showing how good he could be when healthy. Thompson had offers from a number of schools after two years with Iowa Western including Arkansas, Iowa State, Western Kentucky and more before he settled on Indiana.

Last season Thompson made just one appearance and while he won’t be in a starting role this season, his journey over the last few seasons shows he’s talented, hard working, and willing to fight through adversity. Thompson is a reliable option should someone need rest or get hurt.
