Throwback Thursday: Michigan 20 Indiana 10

In week 12 the Hoosiers headed up to the Big House to take on the Wolverines. While Indiana fell yet again to Michigan they proved they belonged on the same field. It was a cool scene late in the game when the snow really started coming down under the lights, but the weather certainly didn’t help the Hoosiers in this one. The wind clearly affected both the passing game and the kicking game and unfortunately for the Hoosiers, they couldn’t do enough other things to pull off an upset.

We have reached week 10 in our 2016 Throwback Thursday series and today we look back at Indiana’s 45-31 loss to the eventual Big Ten champion Penn State Nittany Lions. Indiana had caught the turnover bug at Rutgers the week before and the symptoms were carried back to Bloomington as the Hoosiers coughed up five fumbles. Had Indiana held on to just half of those fumbles, the Hoosiers probably walk away with the win. This was one of Richard Lagow’s better games as he threw for two touchdowns and no interceptions. His day could’ve been much better had some of his receivers hung on to passes that would have either been huge gains or touchdowns. The defense did its job bottling up Saquon Barkley and taking the ball away twice, but it wasn’t enough after Trace McSorley started hitting the deep passes he missed earlier in the game. When fans look back at this game, it’ll be another case of shoulda, coulda, woulda.

The second part of our double-header on this Throwback Thursday looks back at Indiana’s sloppy 33-27 win over Rutgers. Indiana had four turnovers, botched several field goals and extra points and probably should have won this game by 20 or more points. While the overall quality of play was disappointing the Hoosiers netted their fifth win of 2016 and climbed over the .500-mark in November.

Since we skipped last Thursday we are going to double-dip on the Throwback Thursdays this week. First we’ll take a look at the Hoosiers win against Maryland.

Indiana returned home to face Maryland after a disappointing trip up to Northwestern. The Hoosiers desperately needed a win to keep their bowl hopes afloat. It was a beautiful, warm Saturday afternoon and the Hoosier offense would finally show signs of life.

Throwback Thursday: Northwestern 24 Indiana 14

Indiana has not had great luck against Northwestern over the last 30 years. The 2016 edition of this series saw Indiana asleep at the wheel in the first half as they fell behind 24-3, before the defense woke up and gave the offense a chance. It was an ugly offensive game for the Hoosiers, who couldn't get anything going on the ground and forced Richard Lagow to throw the ball 59 times. The Wildcats gashed the Hoosier defense early, but was shut down late and got help from two unbelievable interceptions to seal the win. There was a lot of luck involved in this game, Northwestern defensed five passes, intercepting two while Indiana defensed 10 and had no takeaways to show for it. Winning on the road in the Big Ten is difficult, but IU made it harder on themselves than it should've been.

Throwback Thursday: Nebraska 27 Indiana 22

File this under ‘Frustrating Loss’ for the Indiana Hoosiers. IU was doomed by digging a 17-0 hole while failing to take advantages in starting field position ultimately falling 27-22. The Hoosiers did a tremendous job of holding Nebraska to just 10 points in the last three quarters and the defense gave IU a chance to take the lead when Tony Fields picked off a pass, but conservative play calling netted five yards and zero points. The Indiana run game was ineffective and Indiana averaged just 4.8 yards per play. The more I re-watch these games, the more I am unimpressed with last year’s play selection.

Throwback Thursday: Indiana 34 Florida International 13

Once again we will be doing our Throwback Thursdays by taking a look at last year's games. Today we start with the Hoosiers' impressive opening week win 34-13 over Florida International. The game set the tone for a defensive turnaround and was a great road victory. However, there were some warning signs of issues that'd rear their head later in the season. IU wasted a number of opportunities in the red zone, Richard Lagow was not as accurate a passer as he had shown in fall camp, and Griffin Oakes' struggles with what should be automatic field goals continued. We have also included our new box score (thoughts please).
