/Written By Ben Gillard
Welcome, Hoosier fans to the 2024 Hoosier Huddle Countdown! Over the next 100 days the Hoosier Huddle staff will feature every player on the 2024 roster in anticipation of the season opener on August 31st against the FIU Golden Panthers. Today, we look at highly touted Freshman QB, Tyler Cherry.
COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: # 60 (#15) – Tyler Cherry
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 215 pounds
Hometown: Greenwood, Indiana
High School: Center Grove
Class/Position: Freshman / Quarterback
The jewel of Indiana’s 2024 class, Tyler Cherry, looks to cement his legacy among Antwaan Randel-El and Michael Penix Jr. as the next great IU quarterback.
A four star recruit coming out of Center Grove High School, Cherry was rated a top-25 quarterback prospect nationally, ranking as high as #6 on On3’s list, as well as being ranked the #105 overall recruit nationally (On3) and a consensus top-15 recruit in the state of Indiana. Cherry received tons of offers and was recruited heavily by big-name programs such as Penn State, Missouri, and Michigan State before ultimately choosing IU.
During his time at Center Grove, Cherry helped lead the Trojans to a Class 6A State Championship as a junior, posting a 23-4 record over his junior and senior seasons. Over his high school career, Cherry passed for 56 touchdowns and rushed for 8 more. Cherry broke the Center Grove career records for passing yards (5,461), passing touchdowns (56), completions (364), and completion percentage (68.5). This led to Cherry being named IFCA Mr. Football (Quarterback) and being selected to the IFCA All-State Team.
With a 6’5”, 215 lbs frame and big arm, Cherry is the prototypical pro-style passer. His physical gifts and talent make him an electric playmaker who is talented enough to be a day one starter for the Hoosiers. However, Cherry has a great opportunity to develop as he sits behind and learns from veteran QB Kurtis Rourke and high school teammate Tayven Jackson. Once he gets his shot, however, Cherry could be a long term answer at quarterback
