What retail, restaurant, service biz company do you miss most?
I miss browsing the shelves of Blockbuster. Holding the VHS/Dvd’s seemed cool. Was also an excuse to grab some ice cream.
I miss the Blackberry and buying Kodak film. Something cool about grabbing a role of Black and white for the manual camera.
Sizzler. Full buffet/salad bar plus you could get steaks cooked to order.
when I saw the title, my first thought was Blockbuster. In a similar vein, music stores. So great to spend a rainy or cold afternoon perusing albums and listening to different music the clerks played. Surprisingly, my favorite book store in Charlotte is still hanging on. Shout out to Park Road Books! Just a few storefronts down from the best hardware store in Charlotte: Blackhawk Hardware, who lures you in with fresh popped popcorn! Honestly both worth a visit if you're in Charlotte!
A funny story about Park Rd books: I didn't go, but my ex got on a Pat Conroy jag, and he was doing a signing there. You had to buy his new book (Beach Music?) and then you could take 1 other title for him to sign, so she took the Great Santini, which was a loosely autobiography based on his Dad. Conroy had been estranged from his Dad (not surprising if you know the story!), but they reconciled late in life and his Dad was with him at this signing so she got to meet him, and has a copy of the Great Santini signed by both Pat Conroy and his Dad, aka the Great Santini.
@kkott I still visit my local record stores. It’s fun to hit on Record Store day.
I liked Prince of Tides. Much better than the movie of course.

I took so many black and white photos of Civil War battlefields that I proved, conclusively, I suck as a photographer.
My family loved Soup Plantation/Sweet Tomatoes. Smaller scale, the Bloomington Hu Hot. The closest one now is in the city that must not be named. Since they cook the food in front of you, stopping in wearing IU gear is safer there than anywhere else in that town.
In Columbus long ago there was Sap's Donut Mill, bought out by Hostess. A world of difference. A man that loved making donuts who can make money at it vs a corporate entity that only wants to make money, there is no comparison.
I grew up in Irvington and lived in Warren Township in our early adult life and it's crazy how much during that 30 year stretch that's now gone. Starting from the intersection of Hawthorne and Washington heading east, these are the things that meant something to me at one time that are now gone.
Linder's Ice Cream (Hawthorne and Washington)
Ralph's Candy Shop
Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips
The Hilton U. Brown Branch Public Library
The Irving Theater
The Snack Shack
The Indiana Barber College
Stuart's Stationary
The Spider's Web
Mr. and Mrs. Cue
Old John's Collectables
Sambo's
Steak and Egg
Pasquale's Pizza
Linder's (Sheridan and Washington)
Irvington Pet Shop
Gene's Barber Shop
Play Bowl
Marsh
The News Stand Restaurant
Beef Quarter
Eastgate Mall
Al Green's Drive In
Kmart
Paramount Music Palace
Service Merchandise
The Brown Derby
Ayr-Way Department Store
That's just a little over a two mile stretch of one street in my old stomping grounds. There are dozens of businesses that have come and gone along that path and others that I could list. So many memories.
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"
@all4you I'm not from that area, but used to hit the Irving Theater. Quite the place.
Marsh
KMart
Howard's Bookstore
Howard's came to mind immediately. All4You reminded me about Marsh and KMart.
On the east side of Indy were two fun places, Eastwood Theater and Paramount Pizza Palace.
@arthur-dent Is the Paramount where they had the giant organ? I think I recall taking a field trip there.
@arthur-dent Wonder what became of that organ? That thing was enormous.
@eppy99 it looks like it came from Oakland, after Indy to Florida then back to Oakland. It was giant.
Whenever I hear a question on this topic, my mind instantly, always, and forever, will go to Quiznos. The pioneer of the toasted sub.
