@kkott you guys ever run into many moose? I’m pretty sure I’ve seen one at RMNP but it could have been Yellowstone. Speaking of Yellowstone seeing so many Buffalo is really cool. I member driving a camper and being held up for like 15 minutes by a herd. Super cool and kids loved it. Def not something you see everyday. Kinda how I feel about seeing whales.
Ouray, Colorado. The beauty of the drive to it, (north or south route - doesn’t matter) can’t be explained and the destination is not too shabby either 😉
@mohoosier we did that Million Dollar Highway, just beautiful country.
@mohoosier @arthur-dent Either of you guys spent time on NM? I've wanted to check out both Sante Fe and Taos. If you've been would you recommend winter? I'm not big on heat. I suppose I can handle a dry heat but still....
I think the San Juan’s are the most beautiful mountains in Colorado. The only reason they are not a national park is because of all the gold mining in the area.
I’ve biked over Red Mountain Pass ( million dollar highway) twice. A spectacular road.
New Mexico is one of my favorite states. The scenery is magnificent and its cultural history is the most interesting of any state. Santa Fe is also one of my favorite cities. Architecture, cuisine, culture, make the whole place very interesting. I’m not as much of an opera fan as my stoker, but the Santa Fe Opera is world class. Los Alamos is close by. White Sands is further away but both worth a visit.
Santa Fe was at the northern terminus of the Royal Road from Mexico City and the Western Terminus of the Santa Fe Trail. That , plus the Indian culture gives Santa Fe a great history.
Read a book called Death Comes to the Archbishop. A good story about the culture and geography.
@eppy99 I have only barely been in NM. We almost planned a trip this September because that is 1) cooler and 2) still green chili season. But we are doing NC instead. A good buddy goes to Taos every year and loves it.
@co-hoosier I’ve been to Leadville. Not sure which mountain range those are.
@co-hoosier Any thoughts on Taos? Is it kind of a hippie arts town? I think I would definitely like New Mexico. What’s the best season to visit?
The Sawatch range is near Leadville. If you down towards the north you’ll go by the 10 Mile Range. To the South you drive by the Collegiate range.
Havent spent as much time in Taos, it definitely doesn’t have Santa Fe style. The only time I’d avoid Santa Fe is during opera season, everything is more crowded and expensive. But it isn’t too bad even in those times. Santa Fe is about 7,000 feet so you take your chances with weather Oct-March. Might be fine or might be digging out of snow. As you go south towards Albuquerque the weather will be milder. Winters are cold not like Phoenix.
@eppy99 I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed the weather in NM, due to my sinus issues, but have only spent a few days in Albuquerque. Wanted to get to Santa Fe but didn’t have time.
The terrain of that part of the country is so unique, it’s always good to see.
@arthur-dent i loved bar harbor but damn it was crowded. insanely crowded.
in answer to the question i would say the ski resort at heavenly. there's spots where you look to the left and see the snow covered mountain and forests and look to your right and see a desert. it's otherworldly. and i hate skiing
@mcm666 that is why voting to restrict cruise ships is a good thing. We have been there in shoulder season and loved it, and during main season and it was tough to do anything.
@arthur-dent I want to go back. We were only there one day and night. I was doing some work at u of Maine
