Sorry if this has been created already. If so, please direct me and I'll delete this one. But I'm a big video game fan and wanted to see if there were other enthusiasts here. My favs are:

-Most sports games (FIFA, Madden, 2K, NHL, NCAA, The Show, etc)

-Pokemon - love

-Zelda

-Most other Nintendo titles

-Stardew Valley

-Football Manager

I'm forgetting others, but that's a decently comprehensive list for me

As a child of the 70's who came of age in the 80's, I was a console/handheld junkie from the get go. I also loved PC gaming. Starting with Tandy Pong from Radio Shack to Mattel Football 1 and 2 then the Atari 2600 to Sega Master/Nintendo, I own virtually every console commercially available here in the US (and some that weren't) up to the PS2, which was the last console I bought. From there I focused more on the PC for gaming. Sports games and fantasy/RPGs were my jam on consoles and handhelds, with PC focusing on emulated console gaming as well as most all of titles from the MMORPG genre. I still dabble in the MMO gaming on PC.

@all4you That's awesome! My PC isn't nearly strong enough to run good games lol. I assume you have a pretty good setup then?

My set up is pretty solid, but it's nearly 10 years old and about to be replaced since Windows is sunsetting support for Windows 10 in October. I can't see upgrading it to run Windows 11, so I will likely get a new PC soon. Nothing too crazy, since the games I play online aren't modern games, but I want it to be able to do more than that in case something new comes out that catches my eye. I reckon $1200-1400 range for something that will carry me through the next decade or so.

I used to build my own rig, but now I use a gaming laptop that I bought several years ago. It's still good enough to run most if not all games, although maybe not at the very highest settings. That said, I tend to fall back on just a small handful of games rather than play anything and everything. My most recent sports game is FIFA 22, and I also have Tropico 6, Evil Genius 2, and a few others I might load up once in a while. I also spent $5 on that FF4 remake, but I haven't finished it yet. I also have a couple of story-driven games I haven't made it to the end of and ended up uninstalling, but might reinstall if I get a hankering for. GTA V and Red Dead 2, particularly.

The only game I have installed and keep installed because I will keep coming back to it and playing it over and over is Crusader Kings 3.

What sort of modern games would catch your eye?

Agreed on that price range, that's not too bad

Which gaming laptop do you use? I'm probably in the market to upgrade my general laptop in the next year or two - I'd definitely consider a laptop that can handle good games and the occasional powerpoint slide/word doc/etc.

I play(ed) alot of MMORPGs (Everquest I & 2, Eve Online, WoW, World of Tanks) so if a modern version of something like that comes along, I want a PC that could run it.

Yeah, for the price range I should be able to get 32GB of DDR5 ram, a 1TB SSD, 8-12 GB GPU, a modern (maybe 1 gen old) CPU with a decent mobo and power supply for that.

I tried WoW once but I was a bit young. I know this doesn't necessarily qualify but I loved Runescape back in the day too. Maybe I should give WoW a fair shot!

I have two sons in their mid 30's that still play Runescape. One more casually, but the other plays quite a bit still. It was a good game. I was always partial to Everquest myself.

This is what I use, or at least the very closest to what I have. Most specs the same. My CPU is one generation older, but the difference is negligible. I ran Red Dead 2 fully maxed, but I think I had to pull back a little on Starfield.

EDIT: I do have one of those laptop platforms with the fan for a little additional cooling. Top level games at max graphics did tend to warm it up a bit before I bought that.

I grew up on the 2600, and stayed a console guy for most of my childhood. Yeah, we could play simple games on the old Kaypro, but we never really upgraded to a good PC that could run games with actual graphics. Then we got an SNES for Xmas one year, and that was a revelation for me. The first Madden, Zelda III, and eventually FF II/IV.

My uncle (who was actually in my age group) had a good PC, though, and got me hooked on things like Civ 2 and Command HQ. Eventually, I convinced my parents to upgrade from the Kaypro to a more modern PC, and I started buying those gaming mags with the discs full of demos. Eventually, I only used consoles for sports games, and now I don't even do that. I just plug an XBox controller into my laptop.

I could be remembering wrong. Haven't played it since last year. Maybe I only had it near-maxxed. But it ran smooth, regardless, and looked great.
