Will Congress ever address the debt and deficit?

$37 Trillion now and growing by billions every day. We're adding another trillion to the debt every 5 months. This is scary stuff and it needs to be addressed but most people and apparently few elected congressmen and our President have any interest in doing anything serious about it.

Just keep cutting taxes and we'll grow ourselves out of the hole.

In answer to the thread question:

No.

So what do we do about that?

Yes and they're addressing it. They'll continue issuing debt and passing on inflation.

I tend to agree. I don't think anything serious is ever going to be done about the debt. I don't know what we do about it.

At some point generations from now maybe it becomes something so unavoidable that it has to be addressed. I don't know.

I might look this up later, but how much are other countries in debt? Are we all just robbing Peter to pay Paul at this point? I'd have to think the US is waaaaayyy up there in terms of national debt, but maybe in 50 years or so there's some sort of world summit where all nations agree to just wipe large percentages of the overall world debt from ledgers. Maybe that's not likely. I'm just spit-balling here - waiting on the possibility that some of the debt might be forgiven isn't really viable.

Japan is in really bad shape.  Their debt to GDP is around 250%.  Several European nations are similar to us.

They'd just use the crisis as an excuse for yield curve control. The banks and/or Central bank would step in and buy.

Yup, we’ll do that and will still be losing ground. What does 150% debt to gdp look like? 175%? How long before the renters really turn on the owners?

So, ya, I’m confident Congress fixes all this before bonds collapse but maybe under the threat of large-scale political violence.  We are about that life. Ha
