There's  no doubt tbat people's opinion of "success" will depend on their political leaning.  If Biden had done exactly the same thing a lot of people would be saying the opposite of what they are saying now.

As far as I am concerned I don't think you ever have success when dealing with the Middle East.  Their national pasttime is fighting.

There are 10 types of people in this world, those who know binary and those who don't.

Interesting thread with lots of fresh contributions.

My response to a successful outcome would be for all the countries in the world to see the futility of war and lay down their arms accordingly.

Instead the world will revisit their arsenal in view of what worked and didn't t work in this latest ME conflict and upgrade their war machines as a result.

I'd put my money on drones and lasers as being the winners.

We won't be able to measure "success" in this intervention for likely 2-3 years down the road and seeing what Iran looks like (mind you I'm not saying our presence will or should last that long). So anyone declaring it a success or a failure currently is FOS.

Three years from now if Iran is

- No longer seeking a nuclear weapon

- No longer using it's proxies to harass the ME

- No longer building drone and ballistic missiles stockpiles to threaten and harass their neighbors

Then yes it was an undoubted success. A lot of people wont like this but I think that would require regular "maintenance" by the U.S. and Israel (hopefully mostly Israel) until the point sinks in. Maintenance that will made a lot easier by our actions right now.

If the IRGC regenerates and goes back to business as usual, then I fail to see how it was a success other than potentially slowing their path to a bomb and degrading their ability to project power temporarily.
