and that might not be a bad idea going forward for politicians. progressives. cradle to grave benes. safety net. socialism. my instinct is wtf is wrong with these lunatics. how the hell does any of this shit resonate with people. it's anathema to all our country is founded on - the tenets of what make america great.
BUT 42 MILLION ARE RECEIVING SNAP?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my god that's a shit ton of poor people. one way or another our country isn't working for htese people. the system. their own failures. whatever it's an enormous number and leaves no doubt as to why progressivism socialism tax the rich resonates
I think taking care of the less fortunate is pretty woven in to the American fabric. Whether its our own, or foreign nations that can't fend for themselves...charity, protection, help, is who "we" have been since before the beginnings of our nation.
Now... just as equally, hard work, self sustainability, entrepreneurship... are all apart of that same fabric.
Up until recently, all of those threads, more or less, worked together to make America an incredible nation and society.
What is tearing that fabric apart, and not allowing those things to coexist any more, that's obviously up for debate. And why are either party claiming or being cast as the parties that "are" those things??
I think a pretty significant portion of the voting bases on both sides of the aisle, these days...probably the largest percentage its ever been in our history... is just as much, if not more, of a vote AGAINST the other side and all the stuff they're doing and standing for, as it is for their own party. Right now, I would say, the extreme left is off-putting to a slight bit more voters than the extreme right is. But there are MILLIONS upon MILLIONs that are voting against both sides of the aisle right now. And that balance is tenuous, at best. I wouldn't feel comfortable, at all, if I were a Republican that cared for ideals and the party, over some of the current leaders that are running things.
Along those lines . . . .
Gallup poll: 42% of democrats have a positive view of capitalism, 66% have a positive view of socialism!
This is scary. This is why AOC, Bernie, and Mamdani get traction. These people actually believe government free cheese would improve living conditions and advance living standards. Entrepreneurs, capitalists, innovators, and risk takers are not part of a socialist’s future. The inevitable result of socialism is a system collapse. It happens every time.
Most (all) European nations are now more socialist than the U.S. They've been trending that way since WW 2. Every single one hasn't seen a system collapse.Along those lines . . . .

How about collapsing? In comparison to other nations their living standards are collapsing, as is their populations as well. Europe is in really bad shape and only getting worse.

@snarlcakes teh amount of startups in the US compared to europe is shocking
Disagree.
Most Europeans have generous government benefits, that’s not socialism. Germany became the European economic heavyweight because of free market capitalism. I don’t think East Germany was seen as an economic success, it was a socialist economy.
@co-hoosier I've asked this question before to Brad, when can we call it socialism? I don't know how governments can control this much of the capital and it not be socialism, but no matter what we choose to call it the results will be the same. Declining living standards and societies.

Did you forget about the peripheral crisis? Nothing has been solved or fixed. European debt-to-GDP is barely better than that of the U.S., particularly if Germany is excluded. Euro area demographics are more problematic, its economic growth is slower and even more of its population relies upon welfare.
I don't see how it fixes itself. It's only immigration in recent decades has been Islamists and we all know how that is turning out.
Well, then you're pulling an argumentative sleight-of-hand and need to define your terms. What is socialism and what is not? Do you believe Mamdani's administration would make NYC more like current Scandinavia or behind-the-Iron-Curtain East Germany?Disagree.

And my previous answer to you is consistent with my posting here: it's a continuum. We live in a mixed economy. So does Europe. They have more benies, less innovation (although they aren't as highly regulated as many assume).@co-hoosier I've asked this question before to Brad, when can we call it socialism? I should put this out there, because I think a lot of you assume things that might not be true: you can make empirical observations about economies, how much socialism and how free their markets, etc. without making value judgments about them or efficiency evaluations.@co-hoosier I've asked this question before to Brad, when can we call it socialism? I don't know how governments can control this much of the capital and it not be socialism, but no matter what we choose to call it the results will be the same. I think that thinking about these things should be driven by data, though, and not ideology. Saying (1) "socialism always leads to collapsing economies" while also saying things like (2) "single payor healthcare is socialism! Social security is socialism! Welfare benefits is socialism! A progressive tax rate is socialism! etc." is not supported by the data. History has shown that the welfare state does not necessarily collapse in upon itself and much of what is called "socialism" is just moving the needle on how much welfare is provided.
