I wanted to restart this for my buddy @bradstevens. It's the only topic he hasn't brought up this week 😀
Can't say he's too wrong on that.https://twitter.com/MichaelAArouet/status/1946228783020671433

You could flip it and it would also not be too wrong.
@mrhighlife Please explain. And if your answer references redistributionist welfare programs. You're completely off base.

Ok. The United States military is one of the largest "almost" socialist entities in the history of mankind. It's helped a few people in this country.
Also why are social safety net programs off the table?

I don't think so, but what are you thinking of, especially on the second one? I'm aware of no collection of communist states that have lifted "billions" out of poverty.
@mrhighlife In the initial tweet, I think it's clear he's referring to state's we'd call socialist or communist over the last 100 years or so vs. the ones that get labeled capitalist (by those socialist/communist states).
But if you want to make the argument that a mixed economy ain't all bad and programs that get labeled "socialist" because they involve taxation and redistribution actually can do a lot of good, I'm with you.
@bradstevens has there ever been a socialist country that was also a democracy? Theoretically that could exist but all I can recall are dictatorships. Or dictatorships disguised as democracies at best.
It all depends on how you want to define things and where you draw the lines. There are democratic socialist states, like the Scandinavian states. But those states don't own the means of production--they are just stronger forms of a welfare state, like ours.@bradstevens has there ever been a socialist country that was also a democracy? Theoretically that could exist but all I can recall are dictatorships. Or dictatorships disguised as democracies at best.
