SNAP/EBT, like virtually any other government entitlement program, is both ripe for abuse and a political football for the 2 headed monster we've created. That being said, the premise of this thread is false, nobody is getting rich from the program. This isn't corporate welfare for large companies, small companies, your corner bodega or producers/farmers large or small.
Instead, it's a welfare program for the poor...the elderly, the challenged/infirmed and children. That there are people or businesses which would defraud or abuse it is a given, as there is always a subset of the population who will lie, cheat and steal when given the opportunity. But that should be an indictment of individuals, not the program and it's goals.
If the OP wants to make an argument that we need more oversight on the recipient and the retailer, that we tie it to work requirements for the able bodied or we impose limitations on what it can be used for then I will join them in making that case. But I see no need to tilt at windmills, which is what I consider the original point to be.
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"
@arthur-dent for sure. And what a weird counterintuitive thing to be cognizant of. If I get a raise I eclipse the threshold and lose snap. Disincentive.
there are ways to make it. Rural Midwest etc. but if that isn’t where you were born etc that’s a nonstarter for many. This is no longer a country to be poor.
I blame Biden in part. Bc he’s a blinkard proxy but bigger than him I think history will look back at Covid as large of an inflection point as ww2. But for the worse.
we have a country where tens of millions are in trouble. And tariffs and all that won’t do shit but make it worse. Every moment a democrat campaigns should be spent on making America more affordable. Every thought. Every penny. Every speech to that end. And be open and transparent.
Dems couldn't care less. The want more non working illegals who steal from the working people because the Dems only care about votes. Listen to this...

@bradstevens it takes the hand of a surgeon to hit the laughing emoji on your cell
@unclemark for sure. But if there’s a spouse, assuming a lot, two Walmart workers would be outside of snap as long as they don’t have ten kids. I bet two Walmart min pay workers with two kids is outside of snap.
again that’s why my thread on progressives and 42 million on snap was so compelling. 42 million is a staggering figure. If we have that many poor WTF would you 1) not want socialism if you’re in that group and 2) support progressive shit
socialism. F yeah. Bring it.
According to the income limits published by Indiana FSSA, someone working 30 hours/week for $14/hour in a single-person household would be eligible for SNAP. Not a lot of SNAP, probably, but some. Not everyone at Walmart in Indiana is making $14/hour or better. And a lot of them feel lucky to get 30 hours.
Whoever said above that Walmart (among others) actively train their staff on how to apply for benefits was correct. That's a thing they actually do, because they know they are paying people at a wage that leaves them eligible for public assistance. That's why you paid 89 cents for that can of corn that I paid $2.49 for at a local grocer who hires enough staff to do the job and pays them enough money to keep them good at it.
@goat minimum wage in Missouri Jan 1 is $15 an hour. That’s $2600 a month. Snap here is $1600 for one.
I averaged 56 one summer in high school.@goat minimum wage in Missouri Jan 1 is $15 an hour. That’s $2600 a month. Snap here is $1600 for one.
Nobody earning minimum wage gets 40 hours.
Those were the days. The way modern labor models have destroyed work culture... Man I could tell you some stories. Let's just say it's not the politicians' fault so many people work two or three jobs.
I was getting $2.75 an hour back then. Those were the days.I averaged 56 one summer in high school.@goat minimum wage in Missouri Jan 1 is $15 an hour. That’s $2600 a month. Snap here is $1600 for one.

My first job was at $4.25 shortly changed to $5.15. amazing how little things changed for so long.
@goat in part bc of a change. min wage jobs were historically thought of as for old people, kids, temporary etc. not to try to cobble a life out of. and some of these businesses that increased wages are being foisted upon were likewise predicated on unskilled low pay labor in order to be viable
