One point I like, spending all that they are on war machines, death benefits, and pensions for wounded; doesn't in any way improve the economy. None of that is going to infrastructure, modernization, or other items that grow the economy. The article calls the Russian economy strong, yet brittle.

Not quite. At least not pre-war. Pre-war, the only part of Ukraine that was predominantly Russian was Crimea. Parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhia also had large Russian populations, but none of those oblasts was anything other than majority Ukrainian - again, before the war.

Numerous referendums have shown the high preference for Russian language and governance for more than 20 years in the eastern oblasts.
The Ukranian response to the will of those citizens was to randomly attack with artillery and missile strikes, often in residential areas, such as Donetsk.
