MRNA COVID vaccine and cancer

From the link below:

  • Cancer patients who received mRNA COVID vaccines within 100 days of starting immunotherapy were twice as likely to be alive three years after treatment as those who never received a vaccine
  • These findings have prompted a randomized Phase III trial to determine if mRNA COVID vaccines should be part of the standard of care for this type of therapy
  • If validated, findings could significantly increase the number of patients who benefit from immunotherapy

I started listening to a new book today, The Body by Bill Bryson, and he gave a stat that amazed me. 1 in 5 cells in your body will produce a cancerous copy. But for the vast, vast majority, your immune system catches it and destroys the cancer.

My wife battled her cancer for more than a year and a half and has beaten it. She and everyone that interacted with her regularly stayed vaccinated, initial and boosters, the entire time. Her Doctors unanimously recommended it. Maybe it helped.

I encourage everyone to donate to MDAnderson. They could not help my son in law, but an IU guy (Dr. Matt Campbell) from the old Peegs board who works there contacted me and tried, and they gave us a bit of hope, and were on the cutting edge of research for multiple rare cancers and treatments.  He was the only guy we found working on and treating Adrenocortical Carcinoma. It was a quick and terrible disease.

They also use the NCAA basketball tournament in a fun way to raise money:

or just send them a check in honor of John Parker Kuhn.

I have so many questions…

how much of that is because of Covid’s impact now vs pre COVID? Are they effective at actually assisting in the response to killing cancerous cells (assume this is what is being researched)? Can proactive vaccinations using those be preventative?
