He was representing Columbus in my youth and well beyond. He and Lugar were very much what I consider the quintessential representatives of the people, people willing to listen and work with anyone. RIP Congressman Hamilton, and to his non-firebrand colleagues who have largely disappeared.
@arthur-dent Indiana and the rest of the country could use a good many more Lee Hamitions and Dick Lugars these days.
They spoke from what made sense in their minds rather than reiterating party talking points.

He was one of the good ones when we still had good ones.
He didn't vote to impeach Reagan or Bush because he thought it would be bad for the country. Think about that. Not bad for the party. Bad for the country.
I miss those days.

Even if I disagreed with him on a policy, I wanted to hear what he had to say, and appreciated his “tone.” He was a statesman, not an adversarial asshole.

Those exact words describe me and Lugar
He’s the only Democratic congressman I ever voted for. Technically, the first and last. Next election I will not vote for a MAGA candidate at any level, so I may vote for a Democrat. Hopefully, the Republicans in AZ don’t roll out a MAGA.He was representing Columbus in my youth and well beyond. He was my representative and was literally the only Democrat in a national office that I ever voted for when I lived and voted in Indiana. Great man. I worked on Lugar's campaigns a few times and never campaigned for Lee, but met him on trip to DC once

I really liked him. I always listened to what he said. I may not always agree with him but I think he was being honest. There are 10 types of people in this world, those who know binary and those who don't.

Towards the end of his life, he spent a lot of his focus on Congress regaining it's power. Something upon which I wholeheartedly agreed.
Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan.
