Our history with mental institutions isnt exactly one to be proud of. Maybe that is a good stat.

Deinstitutionalization is a direct cause of higher homelessness, overpopulation of prisons (and subsequent discharges of bad actors into society) and increased financial strain on urban areas.

I agree with both of you. We need much stronger and more robust mental health treatment. We've seen the harm of institutionalization and the harm of deinstitutionalization. We've come a long way in how mental health is viewed in the decades since deinstitutionalization, and I believe if we were to put forth the effort and dollars we now spend on the current piecemeal approach towards a more structured institutional approach combined with rigorous oversight, we would see better outcomes for both the patient and society as a whole.

We should divert all funds currently used to aid immigrants to mental health treatment & facilities for Americans that are struggling. It’s awful that we abandon our fellow citizens that need help while giving free rides to millions that shouldn’t be here…
