@jdb I think some things will naturally normalize once Trump is off the scene. He's just too divisive. When he finally rides off, a lot of the vitriol on both sides will lose an important fount.
The divisions now seem different. Historical divisions were about policy issues and ideas. Those tend to go away through compromise and changing attitudes. Now divisions are about demographics, men, women; black, white, brown; young, old; and more. Seems like those who see divisions as advantageous will turn it into a demographic contest. Hard to move away from that.
Is that accurate though, CO? The 60s was a powder keg, partly driven by the civil rights movement (seems racial and demographic). There was an upset, protest-filled youth that seems like Gen Z. There was growing divisiveness between urban and rural areas that wasn't repaired until the 80s, and even then, was only modestly repaired.
Why is it different? Most people don't support trans acceptance as the norm, but moderate Dems are just afraid to speak out on the topic.

On the face of it, that could be. I just don't see the attacks and rhetoric improving, which may lead to long-term paralysis (politically and socially). I hope I am wrong, but it is a concern.
I'd also offer the idea that our best and brightest people have no interest in running for public office.
IMO, the racist Democrats are one who are easily the most divisive. They resort to calling everyone racist Nazis which is not even close to the truth. I will never ever consider or even listen to a Democrat because I view the Democrat Party as racist as F. They want to take away Freedom of Speech and dictate how people live and what they say. If you want a diverse society then STFU and go live like you want to live. Nobody is stopping one from doing that. When Trump is gone they will target someone else.

I'm not saying I think everything will be great. I just think both sides will lose a little bit of steam when he's gone, and that should at least help a bit.
@snarlcakes is the debate really about closed or open borders?
Seems to me it is about Congress and a President agreeing to legislation which establishes immigration laws with which a majority in both parties can agree.
Going back and forth to extremes on open and closed borders depending on who occupies the Oval Office is more about Men than Laws.
Aren''t we a nation of Laws and not Men?

Laws only matter if those in charge are willing to enforce them, which Dems showed they are not.

Personally, I think most of the discussion is around open or closed border. Trump has shown President's have the ability to pretty much close the border and Biden showed they also have the agility to allow in millions. The voters will ultimately decide on open or closed borders moving forward. Hope all is well.

Glad to see you posting again, hoot.
@jdb This is a great topic and I have some definite ideas, but the constant personal attacks between Shooter and Mrs. Doubtfire are a real disincentive to participation. It seems they derail every thread. Is there any mechanism for reporting that kind of behavior and what, if anything, might be the result?
There's a Report button on every post. Sammy pays attention.
Send an avalanche of 'reporting.
Nothing...I repeat nothing will be done.

Actually, the Rule of Law can only function in a homogeneous society where exists a common respect for those laws. The socialist disruptor's goal is the undermining of our society; hence the street riots referred to as 'protests'.
This is kind of off topic, but...
I guess there was supposed to be an "America First" type protest today at Center Grove H.S. as a counter to the Ice Out student walkouts at other area high schools.
3 things transpired:
1. There was a lot of backlash as it became apparent that the "America First" protest was created by parents and staff who were upset at walkouts at other schools.
2. There was ZERO student participation in the "America First" event. ZERO.
3. Students are going to have their own Ice Out protest tomorrow.
Looks like the adults got played.
