The Champions League thread

I know there's a handful us that watch the champions league religously.  I thought it deserved it's own thread.  I got home in time to see Real Madrid get a lucky handball call for a PK score.  I think it was a horrible call.  The Marseille defender had a beautiful slide tackle.  His momentum took him one direction, the ball bounced and hit his arm.  There was literally nothing the defender did wrong.  I hate these type of calls when the guy makes a great play and an unfortunate play of the ball  leads to a PK.  There was no advantage gained by the play.  Hoping Marseille can find another goal.

In the Dortmund vs Juventus game I believe it was scoreless at halftime.  It's now 4-3 Dortmund.  My guy Serhou Guirassy hasn't scored which will be the first game this season he's gone scoreless.  He's one of the best strikers people don't know about.  Shite, before I'm even done with this message, Juventus ties it up in the 96th minute.

Oh btw American Timothy Weah scored for Juventus.  Thats a big goal for an American.

We've got some big games tomorrow.  I've got an interest in Chelsea, I've been buying up the new kid Estevao's soccer cards.

PSG vs Atalanta

Liverpool vs Athletico

Bayern vs Chelsea

Regarding that Timoth Weah goal, I didn't realize that was the first Champions League goal scored by an American.  I would have thought Pulisic scored before.

@eppy99 Weah plays for Marseille I believe! But a great goal nonetheless. And, Pulisic definitely scored in the UCL....right? Did I just create that memory in my head? Think he bagged one during Chelsea's run

We’ve got PSG vs Barcelona today!  Super excited for this matchup but there’s major injuries on both sides.  As always I’m pulling for Barca, Yamal is back from injury so it’s must watch TV.  PSG has 7 injured players most likely out that started in last years Championship game.  Barca will be without Raphinha and Gavi.  It’s a shame we don’t get to see Dembele vs Yamal.  I have a feeling Yamal is going to play with a chip on his shoulder after taking 2nd in voting behind Dembele for the ballon d’or.

If you’re looking for another game to casually watch.  I’d recommend Chelsea vs Benfica.  Cole Palmer will be out which means 18 year old Brazilian, Estevao should be getting a start.  This kid is gonna be special, like Neymar level special.  I think by next summers World Cup one of the narratives will be watch the young superstars Yamal and Estevao.  I’ll be keeping a close eye on him this season.  Btw, to be totally transparent I’ve got a handful of his rookie cards 😜.

Anybody watching this PSG/Barcelona game?  Even with the injuries it’s been high level. Both teams have so much young talent.  They hardly miss a beat when a player goes down. 1-1 at half.

@eppy99 psg is really really good.  high level on both sides as you said but psg also play fast.  super high quality and super fast.  i have not been able to catch much epl and randomly i've watched more mls than usual.  about 90 percent of the soccr i've watched in the last two months is mls.  yesterday's game looked like watching a completely different sport

I was super impressed with PSG’s ability to attack and not make dumb defensive mistakes.  Hakimi, Mendes and the entire defense are world class.

As for my favorite team Barcelona they can attack and play with imagination as well as any team in the world.  Even without Raphinia or Gavi lost to injury and Lewandowski coming off the bench they’re incredible with Yamal as the engine.  They have to figure out how to defend if they’re going to play that high back line.  Just way too many mistakes with the youth they have.  Until they cut back on the defensive mistakes (maybe it’s their youth) they won’t be hoisting the champions league trophy.

As of today if PSG returns their injured players I like them to win back to back and it might not even be close.

@eppy99 2008-2015 Barca. Ray Hudson and Phil schoen on the call.  Prime Messi xavi iniesta is the peak of the sport.  It was pure perfection and if I never watch another game I’m fine with it.  I have no doubt I’ve seen the best I’ll see in my lifetime

@mcm666 I was to busy playing dad during those years.  Even though I’ve always been a fan I was reduced to watching the World Cup.  These days with all the streaming options it’s hard  ot to have access to all the great leagues, cups and teams.  I’d probably be divorced if I watched as much soccer back then as I do now.

@eppy99 as mark milton will tell you nothing you say today is as special.  i'll make a list of games for you to watch.  spain and barca during that era broke the game.  pinnacle.  there has never been anything like and never will be anything like long-haired messi.

TUESDAY 11/25 EST 3:00pm

Chelsea vs Barcelona

This will be the first time Lamine Yamal and Estevao will play each other.   Mark this down as the most important game in a new rivalry.  This will be the next Messi vs Ronaldo era.  Fans who have never watched Estevao may even come across thinking he’s better than Yamal.

I absolutely love Yamal but I worry he’s playing to much as this young age and his ego may if not already become an issue.  He’s got to stay hungry to reach his potential which is massive.  Estevao may not be quite as talented, but I think he’s more humble and will work to become even better.

Circle your calendar boys….

@eppy99 That'll be a fun one! I don't know if anything can match Messi vs. Ronaldo but I'm hoping we see some fun rivalries in the future
