It's a different world nowadays, with lots of "humps" to get over.

Lots of humps, I mean excuses
@hoosiers94 Like someone on here said last year….I have been humped to death!
I checked out on following any of this... Damn it coach, have just a little bit of awareness and don't use that term!
Having said that... and as disappointing as last week was... The difference in how IU did figure some things out in that game, despite quite obviously being out manned, is pretty stark versus what we looked like and did last year against Louisville. And last year's Louisville team wasn't nearly as talented, or as good, as this year's Louisville team is.
So... still processing how bummed out I should be with the realities of this team and roster hitting me square in the face last week. Versus what appears to be a fair bit of grit and resilience from the players and staff.
Hoping the last 1/3 or so of the LVille game gives CDD and the players something to rebuild their season on. That 28 minutes of play was good enough to beat a lot of teams remaining on their schedule. The first 10-12, and then a lot of the Minnesota game... well... if THAT is who we end up being more than not... I'll probably just choose to not watch them much. Which would really suck.
For decades, there was no competition for fan interest. Now there is. IU was a basketball school for decades because it was the only game in town, but the program has declined since Knight. Couple that with Cig and the football team's meteoric rise, and it's clear IU is now a bonafide football school. The program's momentum is unparalleled, while hoops continues to flounder in the lake.
The soul of IU basketball left with Knight, and it will take a special coach to bring it back. DeVries ain't that guy.
I really hate that this turned into a Woody/bash the new coach thread. It could have been something so much better.

According to the RMK video, if our team is mentally prepared to win and fully understands its strengths and weaknesses, it should be the best team it can be and should be able to win some games. What is the perception of those who have coaching experience... is the program close to doing that?
@ams66 Hard to tell definitively, but I'd say since we've been inconsistent, that no, this team isn't showing what RMK was talking about. We've had some slow starts, which points to not being mentally ready to play. And we've completely abandoned for long periods of time, what I have to think is what our identity is supposed to be, which is wide open, screening, hard cutting, ball movement based offense... and then high perimeter pressure defense. Players abandoning core philosophies, and CDD seemingly allowing it, aren't great examples of what RMK was referring to, I wouldn't say.
we have a very good coach- he had to get an entire team from the portal! Unlike Woody, he did not pay top dollar for proms Donna’s- he got what he could and what he felt would play hard and his style.
my gawd- we have folks here that hated Woodson and the top dollar mercenaries! Yet now, some of those same people are saying we should have backed the brinks up for friggin Malik Renuea! DD will turn this thing around. His team didn’t fold the tent Saturday like woodsons did - they stayed in it and got it close a few times- just could t hit a shot or get that one stop needed
I’ll watch- CMP was right, why can’t we get behind a coach?
Pretty much everyone said that the new coach would inherit a fan base that was out of patience. So I'm not surprised that some are already getting frustrated. I hope that doesn't surprise him or anyone else. Still plenty of time to have a good season but we want to start seeing games played with consistency, competing from the opening tip, and winning the games we should win. And not turning on a game and wondering "which team is going to show up today?"
We are clearly now a football school. The only way there was going to be massive excitement for the bbal program was by making a big hire followed by real recruiting success out of the gate. We did neither. Of course we missed our shot at Dusty May but we always seem to be a day late on every hire we ever make. For decades, there was no competition for fan interest. Now there is. It gets harder and harder to get excited with each new hire. I am just numb to the whole situation at this point. A hire like Chris Beard or obviously Bran Stevens would have gotten me excited but this one did not. And really we should not have tons of patience anymore with the portal you do not need fours years to turn it around so we will know real fast if this was a good hire or not.Pretty much everyone said that the new coach would inherit a fan base that was out of patience. @arioznahoosier4554 Just wait until McCollum starts killing it as well. I have a feeling IU will feel some buyer's remorse.
@hoosiers94 IU basketball is now claiming moral victories? My lord, how the mighty have fallen. If the Hoosiers lose at home tonight, watch out; it's not going to be pretty.
Scratch that. I doubt many people would be in a huff over the outcome of a secondary sports team's game.
