Never fear Ulrey. They have found us.
I guess I’m one of those kind of! Look, after all the crap I have watched, I, for one, am just elated to have a normal dude for a coach! No weirdness , doesn’t talk act like he invented the game. Doesn’t hype up players to be Jordan. That, to me, is a great start!
throw in the fact the guy has won at different levels, has somehow convinced some top kids to visit before playing one game. The team looks to play modern ball and he targeted shooting
may not work long team, but man I’m stoked about what may be. Just my opinion
I respect that. Never felt you ever were a pumper , just frustrated like the rest of us. I'm just not taking the bait yet. Been burned too many times to do that without proof.
Thanks! Wasnt much to pump the past 25 years! Just excited to have a normal human coaching us and a guy I can root for Been awhile for this!
I think everyone reading your posts about not taking the bait, understand what you're talking about. But I don't think the optimism that's being typed out on this board, reaches levels of blind fanaticism, that we've seen at times in the past.
For me, I'm processing what I'm seeing, hearing, and experiencing in real time. And from the hire date, through today, this is the best "start" for an IU coach since...RMK maybe? He inherited one recruit, a couple walk ons, and had a very good initial player in his own son. When you factor in situation, personality, immediate results, and just overall vibe...I'd argue that the first 4 months of DeVries tenure is better, more effective, and more of what IU needed...than any of our coaches since RMK. Why not be excited about THAT? Even if you don't agree that its the best, you can't argue it hasn't been a very good start, and much better than the last 3 coaches, at least.
Does that mean anything in terms of what my expectations are for the season? Maybe a little bit. But not to the point where I think IU is "back" already.
There likely weren't any coaches that were going to make IU a FF contender this year. Not even Stevens or Pearl or some other higher profile guy were going to do that. To expect them to be THAT level of good, in year one, is absurd. So once that is established, what CDD has done thus far, and the potential the team showed in PR, and what that could mean for the season... more than enough good things happening to warrant optimism and enthusiasm.
@ge-off What’s all this “normal human being” stuff about? What have we been coached by before? Alien lifeforms? Escapees from an asylum for the criminally insane? Please explain…
@jj_mcclure Quick run down... Davis, runs on the court like a madman in games, and hides in his basement when he's feeling too much pressure... Sampson probably the most normal, but he torched IU's program to the ground in less than 2 years...Crean, weird AF. Clappy clown, diet coke chugging, mad scientist approach, 8 hour marathon practices day before games... Archie might be a serial killer, wet blanket personality... Woodson old school guy that had no time for all the annoying daily activities today's college coaches take way too seriously... like recruiting, watching film, running offenses that actually work, working on fundamentals...
We don't know this yet, but so far, CDD is the most "college basketball coach" ish guy we've had since RMK. Which is nice.
Nah, there's none of that happening. Nobody is even hyping anything up. Most are just saying that winning exhibition games are no reason to scream and complain.
There's no reason to be negative this early in year 1. We won that first game by like 50 and ppl were crying about it. No one was acting like it was some huge accomplishment, just saying its silly to complain about it already.
We get it. You and several others did not want DDV hired. He probably wasn't number 1 on any fans lists, but already trying to run him out of town is silly. There's absolutely nothing to judge him on yet outside of building a team from scratch to kick-off year 1. We'll see how it goes.
What a strange approach. I myself am happy that his(DeVries) approach is more normal. No leaks, business as usual and grinds. I’m not seeing a ton of overhype on this board just general excitement.
it's sad we have to even have this discussion!
if you'll recall or were even on peegs back in the day ... the buzz with Crean was just like this. The savior ... even Archie had a buzz about it. DD has done what any competent coach would have done. Nothing more. So am I glad he's competent. Yes. Should we even have ever had to worry about that ... hell no. That's the point
this exactly. You can't make this shit up. Hence the jaded outlook. Gonna take some proof to shake this shit off man
not crowning him anything then yet. Semantics. I'm not all giggly due to his hiring nor progress. It's normal big boy basketball operations. Which should have always been the case. You don't get a trophy for showing up and doing what's expected. It's a shame we hired a coach prior who completely abused that but that birthed the lack of faith
@hoosiers94 Oh, i think skepticism is plenty fine.
I will be in the prove it to me camp, I just don't see anything so far to give me concern about things. Its too early to make any judgements. I like what I've seen so far and the general approach and atmosphere of how he's going about things. Night and day from Bigfoot who just wanted to show up on game day and sign autographs while sitting in his throne.
DDV and this staff is putting in the work and rebuilding the relationships that Bigfoot torched the past 4 years.
My main thing is we won't be able to judge much after this season either (barring a complete collapse or something egregious). I would also say the same about any surprising success or runs this year.
We've seen plenty of ppl do something out the gate only to immediately fall flat in the end.
It'll be a few years before we know. I would expect to see upward progression the entire way or I'll gladly point it out.
I'm just don't see the point in trying to pick apart a glorified scrimmage that was more about team building than anything else. We had a team of guys who don't know each other who got some good minutes in and won some games. Thats about all that can be said about it.
I know the comparisons to BenMc and Dusty and Pope/Kelsey will be happening all year but again, 1 or 2 seasons prove nothing for any of these guys. We need to see multiple years of evidence to judge them all.
I also thoroughly remember the actual coaching search threads from the past and know that despite the tone I see now, plenty of ppl, if not most, also did not want anything to do with McCollum and his system/style. I'm seeing some revisionist history there by ppl acting like he was the majority of ppl's number 1 guy.
Same with Dusty. There were many many threads and posters trashing him last year and downplaying what he did.
I would prefer to just not see a post every day saying we missed on those guys over some random 1 game result or record in year 1. Its not enough to gauge.
