In Crean's last season here he went 7-11 with a roster far more talented than the one we have this season.  Bryant, Blackmon, Anunoby, R. Johnson, Hartman, Morgan, Davis, McRoberts, etc.

In his defense Anunoby I believe missed most of the year with an injury. Having him would have certainly changed things.

He played until near the end of Jan. and that team had already spun out. They lost to Fort Wayne, an awful Neb team (that finished 12-19) and several others. Had lost 4 of 5 just prior to him getting hurt.

They may not have finished as bad, but that team wasn't heading anywhere either.

For some reason I thought it was early in the season hard to remember. But I do remember the year before they had a pretty weak schedule and when they to to the sweet sixeteen got just rocked. So that may of looked better than it actually was.

Yes, the prior season they bombed the pre-season. Despite going 15-3 in the B1G and winning it outright they only got a 5 seed

They lost to an 11-20 Wake Forest team and a bad UNLV team (both 100+ in KP) along with getting smoked by Duke.

Yeah I knew they did not get a very good seed which tells you they did not beat alot of good teams. Even his very best team with zeller faded down the stretch. They lost to Wisconsin in the BTT and then of course the Syracuse game. Looking back now that team underachieved by alot given expectations.

@arioznahoosier4554 IIRC one of the criticisms of Crean was that he didn't back off on practice intensity down the stretch. His players were just worn out by tournament time.

Unlike Cig who barely practices

They’re the Best Team in College Football—and They Barely Practice at All

Indiana went from one of college football’s losingest schools to the top team in the country. And it didn’t take endless hours on the practice field to get there.

Everyone's favorite topic, I know. This has been debated on and off for a decade now. I think two things are true:

1.) It was the right decision to let go of Tom at the time.

2.) We didn't know how good we had it.

Imagine having three Sweet 16's in a span of 8 years, boatloads of top recruits, several top 10 rankings, and two big ten championships over that span.

Again, I think firing Tom was the right decision at the time, but man give him credit - he took a failed program and took it back to relevancy very quickly. It didn't work out, but I do miss those times sometimes, especially now.

The Anunoby injury did no favors for Crean during his final year and contributed  to his firing. The 2016/17 team completely fell apart after OG missed the balance of the season with knee surgery some time January 2017.

Thats revisionist history. That team already suffered multiple terrible losses with OG playing.

Yeah the team lost big games while Anunoby was playing earlier in the year but completely fell apart after his surgery. They only won 5 out of the last 15 while he was mending. With the coaching job Crean did that year, perhaps they would have lost those anyways. I don't know. That was one of the more disappointing seasons of IU b-ball that I have watched in Assembly Hall over the years.
