Everyone's favorite topic, I know. This has been debated on and off for a decade now. I think two things are true:

1.) It was the right decision to let go of Tom at the time.

2.) We didn't know how good we had it.

Imagine having three Sweet 16's in a span of 8 years, boatloads of top recruits, several top 10 rankings, and two big ten championships over that span.

Again, I think firing Tom was the right decision at the time, but man give him credit - he took a failed program and took it back to relevancy very quickly. It didn't work out, but I do miss those times sometimes, especially now.

It was the right decision. Crean's best days were well behind him as he had completely burned every bridge he had throughout the state.  You can state that he won 2 B1G titles and made 3 Sweet 16s all you want but that was never happening again. He would've struggled just to make the tournament again and his tenure at Georgia was proof of that.

Obviously we should never have fired him its been downhill ever since. I think glass set the famous expectations of national championships too high given the guys we hired national championships were never happening. If you want national titles you do not hire archie miller and mike woodson you hire proven winners at a top level or you keep crean while you continue to look. The biggest mistake we keep making is firing guys and hiring guy who are the same or even worse. I was ready to move on from him but firing someone just for the sake of it now is foolish you better make sure you got an improvement lined up.

Tom Crean did alright for us. He'd have turned us around a lot faster in the NIL era. Not sure why he burned bridges in the state though. I was a little surprised he was canned, thought he'd get another year, but maybe that is why.

DeVries staff seems to be working the recruiting trail better than our last three coaches. Hopefully a Zeller or Ferrell shows up for us. Or out of state guys like Oladipo or Vonleh.

In Crean's last season here he went 7-11 with a roster far more talented than the one we have this season.  Bryant, Blackmon, Anunoby, R. Johnson, Hartman, Morgan, Davis, McRoberts, etc.

OG’s season ended in the middle of January. We went 4-8 after his injury

I know.  That was still a very talented team.  Should've easily made the tourney.

Absolutely. He got IU out of the hell hole left by Sampson ... and he's responsible for many of the good IU hoops memories this century.

It ultimately didn't work out, but anyone who doesn't think it was an overall success has "Syracuse Syndrome."

In his defense Anunoby I believe missed most of the year with an injury. Having him would have certainly changed things.

He played until near the end of Jan. and that team had already spun out. They lost to Fort Wayne, an awful Neb team (that finished 12-19) and several others. Had lost 4 of 5 just prior to him getting hurt.

They may not have finished as bad, but that team wasn't heading anywhere either.

The Anunoby injury did no favors for Crean during his final year and contributed  to his firing. The 2016/17 team completely fell apart after OG missed the balance of the season with knee surgery some time January 2017.

Thats revisionist history. That team already suffered multiple terrible losses with OG playing.

It was worth it if only to piss off Jim Harbaugh.
