The Curious case of Darryn Peterson

Kansas has one of the best NBA prospects in a while and the best player in college basketball on their team.

There’s just one problem. Darryn doesn’t like playing basketball.

He has missed the majority of games this year with “injuries” people can’t quite articulate.

Kansas knocked off #1, undefeated Arizona tonight without Darryn. If you’re 2 time national champion Bill Self do you just tell this kid to sit it out, we’re gonna ride the rest of the year with the guys that want to play?

If I were one of the guys who paid into that 4 million, I would be sending some peeps over to see that kid today. Biggest game of the year and he sits with "flu-like" symptoms. Shit.

I would draft Dybansta over him for this reason alone.  People are comparing him to Kobe... Kobe would NEVER have sat out last nights game for anything less than a major injury.  If he is sitting these games for draft purposes, I hope there are a handful of GM's at the top, that are thinking like I am, and he slides down a few spots.

Cmon man.  The poor kid was on his death bed last night.

"Flu like symptoms", but out there exposing everyone else to it?  That's some BS.  Sit him the rest of the year.

Why are we automatically assuming the kid is taking everyone for a ride?

@unclemark I was largely on the other side of this until last night.  He looked more than well enough to play in the biggest game of the year for his team last night... in shoot around and warmups.  Obviously I'm not him, and he very well might have felt completely off...maybe he was getting dizzy... tons of potential things that would have had him sit.  Its just not something you often see... most elite competitors, in a game like last nights, would chew off their own arm to get in to a game like that.  So combine that with how many other games he's either completely sat out, or missed large chunks of the game, when he looks seemingly healthy...  I smell a rat.

If the Pacer's pick stays in the top 4, he's the one guy that I don't want them to pick. No love to compete is unacceptable.

Looks like he's only played in 13 of their 24 games this season.

@hooky There are some "reports" going around of someone on the sidelines before the game hearing him and Self going back and forth about it.  The gist being Self was annoyed, and told him if he wasn't all in, to just not play... and Peterson said something to the effect of "F -it then, I'm out".  And self said OK.

Nowadays, I take those things with a grain of salt... so much AI generated, fake stuff... but if it is true, I'm sure it will make its way to NBA GM's.  I wouldn't touch this guy with a 10 foot pole if I were picking top 10 or so...if all this stuff is true.  Too many other really, really good players, to potentially waste a pick on a guy that could be a diva from day 1.

It's true.  To the point that the KU SID responded to the story and tried to discredit the source.

The Mavs fan in me has me watching a lot of these guys in the top 10.  I don't think from prospect perspective there is much difference in the top 3.  I'd take Peterson if i were the Mavs and they repeat last years lottery. I thought Dybantsa then i saw peterson play and what he can do with the ball plus they need replace Luka after that debacle of a trade.   Secretly, i am rooting for the 4th pick and Flemings but there is quite some separation from the top 3 to next tier. You just can't take chances and deviate from the top 3 of Boozer, Peterson, Dybantsa.

Let's remember, we're literally 1 game on from Conerway doing the exact same thing...it does happen.

I've watched the kid play several times and he's the real deal, just makes everything look effortless. IMHO, he's easily the number 1 pick from a potential stand point and I honestly don't think it's that close.  However, now with all of the games he has missed, he's "not playing" himself potentially out of that top spot. I can't imagine that anyone in his camp doesn't realize that and would be encouraging him to miss more games, but who knows. It will be interesting to watch it continue to unfold.

Is this your own conjecture? Or you know this to be true?

It is pretty common knowledge that he did, indeed, miss the Wisconsin game for illness, but you seem to be suggesting he was not, in fact, ill, despite Fisch and other media members saying that the flu had been going through the team since the UCLA game.
