McCollum is from Iowa City. I expect he always wanted to coach there and Iowa was smart enough to hire him, unlike IU with Dusty May. This is why I still think Dolson is at best a mediocre AD- you don’t go 1/2 on the big coaching hires if you are good at your job. Cignetti makes a lot of inept people look competent. Let’s hope he keeps winning.

Dolson struck gold on accident with Cig

he's not a top tier AD. He was brought up from the ranks due to attrition

he's ok. There are better options

if he can somehow eek out a couple Q1 wins, not have ANY more bad losses, finish .500 or better in the B1G

and get into the tourney (no play in).  that should calm the natives.

then go and win a tourney game (or 2) it would be massive

that is a lot of if'n and as undisciplined as we seem so far....

there is plenty of bball to be played.  we shall see...

and IF is a BIG word

By all accounts DeVries was always the #1 choice after the big fish all said no.  We had discussions with McCollum but he was the back up and likely knew that.  Both coaches are from Iowa and it was rumored DeVries was Iowa's first choice as well.  Iowa lucked out.

We have no way of knowing who 'lucked' out or not 12 games into 1 season. This is the same nonsense we heard about Archie/Holtman (OSU would have hired Archie if we didn't grab him first). In the end, neither of them were up to snuff.

10-10 here, which is exactly what I would’ve said before the conference season started.  We lost to Minnesota because we had about as bad of a shooting night as possible. I expect us to win a game or two we shouldn’t because of the opposite.  I am still on board the Devries train. I think he is very smart and capable in-game adjustments.  He just has a very flawed roster with no center and two PG’s that can’t shoot (obviously plenty of that is on him, but in year one, I will extend a semi-pass).

I am not just trying to make excuses, but I think several injuries to start the season have really hurt.  We need Dorn to play big minutes to allow three dead eye shooters to be on the floor at the same time to make this offense click. He is finally getting up to speed.  Hopefully we start to see a whole lot more lineup with just one of Teyton/Enright moving forward.  I am hoping Drake contributes there some as well.

The biggest disappointment to me is the fact that we are so non-aggressive when it comes to rebounding, but so super aggressive when it comes to on-ball defense and fouling. That has to be cleaned up with a mixture of both if we’re gonna stay in a chance.

blocking out is a labor of love. There are plenty of drills he can do daily to get their minds on it.  I've noticed the same lackluster effort on the boards by most of the team. I did however see TD have a couple of great box outs in the Siena game so perhaps it's being addressed.

@hoosiers94 let’s hope.  They beat the hell out of the other team on the perimeter and on drives to the basket, but then immediately go soft as Charmin the second a shot goes up!

I think the next 3 games after the break will likely tell us all we need to know.

The next 2 are pretty much must wins against Wash at home and then a bad Maryland team on the road (would be the first true road win).

Then a 'marquee' Q1 at home against a very good Neb. team. Bare minimum has to be competitive to the wire but in all honesty its a game that needs to be won at this point in the year since we've flopped in the other big games so far.

Woodson had more size and talent than DeVries has this yr.  Who was DD supposed to get that he didn’t try to get?  He beat out UK for Wilkerson-  this group for DD was all about rebuilding the culture-  I hope this guy gets the time the last few dudes got bc I think we will all be happy by yr 3- Jmo

For all of that to happen first off there would be no injuries at all given the complete lack of depth.  Then the three's would need to drop at a pretty high clip most all games. Not saying its not possible but the odd imo are pretty low.

@arioznahoosier4554 Two years should be more than enough to see what DeVries can do. He's going to need to do one heckuva job in the portal this coming Spring in order to push the needle forward.

Yes he is going to need to kill it. He got one high level guy last year I dont count his kid that's a no brainer. He needs three high level guys minimum to get this moving forward imo. If we are relying on sisley, dorn, and some guys who have not played as our nucleus next year we are in big trouble.

Agreed. Can we give him that much time and see what happens?

@arioznahoosier4554 We'll have to see who returns but as you wrote, the current bench guys aren't the solution. I'd like two bigs far superior to Alexis and Bailey, a top notch point guard and a shooting guard. I'm assuming that perhaps a half dozen scholarship players return and the only freshmen recruits are Karvala and Alexander-Moody.

@gerdis That's one of the more ignorant posts I've seen. Congratulations? Woodson had TJD returning and a decent roster to build around. CDD had nothing. Literally nothing. And, this is not the exact roster he wanted, this is the exact roster he could afford. Tremendous difference. Overall, I feel like I can see what he was trying to do, and I think he just had one huge oversight: that he thought he could get away without size and paint presence because he had in the past. Sad, because I think just a really decent post defender/rebounder could make this team a lot better. I can forgive that oversight if he learns and adjusts from it going forward. At least I've seen some of that by finally starting Alexsis over Bailey. In that simple (and obvious) move, he's shown a greater willingness to try and adjust than CMW ever did.

Gonna be hard because a big part of if we can improve is going to take more NIL backing, and that will be hard to garner with the tidal wave football has been and a "meh" year under his belt. Dolson needs to work some magic with donors, but at least he'll have something of a roster to build around if he can keep some of these guys, Sisley most notably. It's certainly been an underwhelming start compared to what Lville and UK did last year, and of course the specter of what Cig did with football, but I'm not giving up hope on CDD yet. Gotta get through this year in the best fashion he can (making the tourney with this roster would be terrific at this point, imo) and then recalibrate for next year.

You have made the same point over and over again and you keep denying that you make it.

Having nothing is NOT an excuse ,it was a choice.
