Woodsons first couple years came with quite a lot of excitement, I would say.

Every first season with a new coach has that air of excitement and optimism.  I do love what it seems like this team will look like.  But I loved what I thought Archie’s first team was gonna look like too.  IPFW changed that pretty quickly.  Gotta see these guys guard some D1 dudes before I get too excited.

@iunorth Not me. I thought it was a shitty hire from the get go. I liked TJD, but always thought that the product was meh.

It'll be a more fun brand of basketball to watch.

The Miller hire promised a defense first approach with a disciplined offense, harkening back to Knight. Too bad it didn't include winning.

@unclemark Archie, on paper, was a good hire. It turned out he wasn't a good fit at IU. Then the Woodson hire was just baffling.

I'm indifferent until they show me excitement...

Absolutely. He was the Dusty May of that cycle. Plus he had a hot wife.

I’m of the opinion that this team could (for once in the recent era) do much better than the bar being set by expectations.  I, however, am not sure if that will translate into much excitement from me.

perhaps it has just been too long?   I’m meh, and I’m not sure that winning will solve much, as many people like to opine.

perhaps that will change, and of course this is just my feelings.  I certainly am not suggesting that I am reflective on how anyone else may feel.

Beating UL or especially UK would go a long way to getting the fans excited again.  Won't be easy.

If winning football causes excitement basketball is a cinch.

Not sure I agree, at least for me.  Perhaps I’ve just found a new sport (CFB) to follow?

@doggy1 I personally wasn't excited about the Woodson hire.  I "famously" gave it a C+ grade...which one of our fellow posters on the old board put in his signature for a year or so...for some reason??  Free advertising for how smart I was, I guess?? Ha ha.  And then it took me about 2 games in to Woodson's tenure to start questioning him and his approach.  I took quite a lot of friendly fire for my repeated insistence that the double post approach, and how he was specifically implementing it, was a huge mistake.  But IU was playing better basketball those first couple years, than we had in a long time.  There was genuine excitement early on in Woodson's tenure.  Then, as time wore on, it became increasingly obvious he wasn't cut out for the job, in many, many ways.

Archie...for me, was kind of the opposite.  I was initially very excited by the hire.  Not sure if I gave it a grade, but it would have been an A.  Then I became very unexcited after his first couple games.  Then started seeing some foundational improvements, to the point where I actually argued for him longer than most IU fans did.  They were boring.  The offense was boring.  But they were becoming more "solid".  But by the last year or so, it was obvious he wasn't gonna be comfortable, and possibly never successful, at IU.

DeVries... I have a pretty solid hope that Dolson is pretty good at all this, by virtue of the Cignetti hire.  And I'm pretty excited about the new, more modern offensive approach.  We'll see how it all plays out.  I think we probably have the best combination of best coach, and best fit, we've had since RMK.  But obviously he's gonna have to prove that pretty early on.  The leash is pretty short nowadays.  Again, not sure if I gave it a grade or not... but I think I'd give the CDD hire a B grade.  But that would be a B in a very tough class like AP Physics or something.  Hopeful that B translates up to A territory over time.

Similar to how I saw things. Was excited about Archie hire (but probably more excited about the end of the Crean era tbh).

Thought the Woodson hire was a joke from the beginning. 65 year old with no collegiate experience and had been a journeyman NBA assistant the prior 10 years. I did not anticipate how smug and arrogant he would be or the complete lack of effort to improve the program beyond spending cash.

DDV I'd put in the middle. Glad to be past the Woodson era. Glad to see modern basketball offense and a Coach who actually embraces 3 point shooting and schemes. Glad to see a coach hitting every event possible and a staff that is putting in heavy work to build relationships and remove the taint from the previous regime.  On court success is yet to be determined. Unfortunately, there is not going to be a lot of slack here in todays environment. He'll need to have shown something within the first 2 years, imo, to get everybody fully behind and avoid a 3rd year hot-seat. I'm optimistic but time will tell.
