unfortunately the perfect storm that allowed immediate success in football did not apply here, but I am not sure it is time to knee jerk react, just yet.
In football, Cig was able to bring essentially his entire coaching staff, more than a dozen players, and his pick of IU players already there. Then jump into the portal, where his whole staff had experience.
DD brought with him no staff, one player, and no holdovers. Despite having the portal, it was a tougher rebuild. So I am willing to wait and see how the roster changes next year and the degree of toughness we play with.
I won't have unlimited patience, since 2-3 good additions can turn around a basketball team and football required a lot more, so it ought to be doable. It just wasn't doable in one offseason.
My biggest gripe with this regime and the transition is exactly this. Dolson saw what Cig did and how he did it (retaining all of his long time assistants. Bringing nearly his entire experienced team with him).
Dolson had all the time in the world to vet all of this since we pushed Bigfoot out mid-season. Targeting a guy who was going to bring no staff and no players while needing to get 13 guys from the portal (with less relative money) during a weak portal class while player costs skyrocketed exponentially was just a very poor strategy. One that should have been obvious early on and either avoided or measures taken to mitigate it.
If there's a 50th Anniversary celebration at AH, I sure hope Buckner gets booed mercilessly. Is that petty of me to want that? Sure. But it's deserved.
That part never happened. I am 98% convinced that Dolson had his guy ever since he was impressed by him at the Puerto Rico tournament. I am sure he started with DeVries, and then his other candidates, such as McCollum, were going to be next. Possibly one or two famous names, and maybe he did look into May, but was rebuffed or the size of the contract was out of our league.Should have just kept Bigfoot another year and taken more time to finally get this right.
Might as well of had. I mean god its just mind blowing the guys they come up with after the so called " exhaustive search".
There's a 'good' story on the hire from Dylan Sinn of the Journal Gazette dated 3/26/25. I don't know how to attach stories or I would. Maybe someone can google and attach. It's titled "Reviewing the Darian DeVries hire..."
Anyway, it discusses the 2023 game v. Miami, who made it to the FF and killed us in the tourney. It looks to me that the game was a first round game in the NCAA (?) Anyway, Drake led Miami most of the second half but lost when Miami finished with a 16 to 1 run. Wasn't the P.R. discussion a separate matter?
Quotes CDD saying "We will know when we have made it when every time a fan, a booster, an alumni, or a former player comes to watch us play...after the game is over, that they will be filled with pride because they have so much respect for how our team plays, how unselfish they are, the joy they play with and their love for this university".
Well........we did have Marquette. After that, not so much.
Yeah, my memory is flawed, I guess that's when Dolson first formed his very positive impression of Coach. When they played Miami tough in the tourney.
A 16-1 run by the other team erasing a lead seems familiar already.

He shouldn't be allowed in the building.
It's sad, really. The first thing I think of with QB isn't the 1976 team. The first thing I think of with Woody isn't winning B1G POY. Their legacies are forever tarnished ... in my book, anyway. And I'd go even further and say they're an embarrassment to the program (and maybe the university as a whole). If there's a 50th Anniversary celebration at AH, I sure hope Buckner gets booed mercilessly. As soon as he's announced the big screen should switch to Dusty May highlights and quotes.
@hoosiers94 No clue if this is true...but I bet he's wrapped so tightly by like minded, old guard, people...and isn't overly active on social media... to the point where he's probably largely ignorant of how he's viewed by large factions of the fan base.

Just like woodson thought he was loved. A few old guys drinking wine with him I guess he thought everyone was like them.

he's a narcissist. I've met him several times as I used to be "a friend " of the program. He reads it doesn't believe it likely and tells himself we are all idiots. His "success " in life tells him he's right. He's a charmer as well so he works a room well
Help is here!
