@hoosiers94 can't compare football to basketball, let alone LSU football. The amount of money the sports bring in are in different stratospheres.

It also would not just be 20 million. Thats just to buy out DDV. You have his entire staff as well. This is on top of the lump sum they paid out to Bigfoot last year and the money spent to buy out DDV from WVU.

On top of that, they'd have to buy out whomever they hired as well. 1 year removed from hiring him there's no way the university would be ok with that. Never going to happen and its not even remotely realistic.

@surjay But this team has already quit midway through DeVries’ first season. Once that happens any chance of a successful tenure is gone.

I wasn't born yesterday I completely understand the difference in the two sports and the revenue that goes with them. How do you know it's unrealistic.  Do you know what they're sitting on?  Or what someone may donate to fix the problem.  It would taking some crafting and planning but it's not unrealistic. Is it unlikely perhaps but it's not unrealistic... 20m is the new 5m.  What we spent last year on him has been expensed and written off.. gone.  And you may hire someone who has a buyout or maybe you won't. You don't know that until you start the search.  Unrealistic no... likely perhaps not.

Was Ben McCollum ever an option? He’s a sideline presence and just seems to be more vocal and “in to it” than DD, who seems to be more like Archie Miller and Mike Woodson. We get the players he brings in but we don’t get a Bennett Stirtz, who is what we were led to believe Tucker was supposed to be. Who believes the next crop will be much different?

Cignetti has a presence. McCollum has a presence. I’m not seeing it with DD and we just continue to be a mid-level, mediocre program.

I get that the timing just wasn’t right for Dusty May. Another presence guy.

This vanilla crap just has to stop.

Can anyone here play this game?

Should have just kept Bigfoot another year and taken more time to finally get this right.

Might as well of had. I mean god its just mind blowing the guys they come up with after the so called " exhaustive search".

Iowa is likely going to make the tourney looking at their schedule. They could easily win 4 or the next 5.

I honestly did not want Brad Bronwell at all but that was because I thought we could do better not worse. I would have take him over DD though for sure as he has done really well in the portal era.

That part never happened. I am 98% convinced that Dolson had his guy ever since he was impressed by him at the Puerto Rico tournament. I am sure he started with DeVries, and then his other candidates, such as McCollum, were going to be next. Possibly one or two famous names, and maybe he did look into May, but was rebuffed or the size of the contract was out of our league.

But we were told nobody wanted the job and we could never ever get a big name. I do not think we ever went after big names. If you want a big name you have to pay a big contract and IU would clearly rather go on the cheap.

Did UK and UofL go 'cheap' as well? You have to look at the current landscape and realize that big names don't need big stages to be highly successful right now.

We missed our chance on May the year prior.

If DeVries is half as competitive as his former bosses and players say he is... He will be motivated by all the 'should have been McCollum, or May ... ' talk. 🤣

I Am curious to see What IU does in the off-season. Do they go all in to get better and ramp up NIL spending, do they tread water, or do they throw in the towel?

If there is left over money from football they maybe ramp it up but if not tread water. Football is now king and that will be the focus imo

unfortunately the perfect storm that allowed immediate success in football did not apply here, but I am not sure it is time to knee jerk react, just yet.

In football, Cig was able to bring essentially his entire coaching staff, more than a dozen players, and his pick of IU players already there.  Then jump into the portal, where his whole staff had experience.

DD brought with him no staff, one player, and no holdovers.  Despite having the portal, it was a tougher rebuild.  So I am willing to wait and see how the roster changes next year and the degree of toughness we play with.

I won't have unlimited patience, since 2-3 good additions can turn around a basketball team and football required a lot more, so it ought to be doable.  It just wasn't doable in one offseason.
