By starting with a new coach.

Will relish this football national championship the rest of my life.  But now time to fix basketball... no reason we can't dominate in both.  Doorknob won't get it done. Time to move on , even the post game comments from Herbstreit, Fowler and SVP said there's no patience anymore with NIL and Portal. If a coach doesn't win we will go out and find one who will. If you don't someone else will.  Applies more so to basketball imo. Right coach with charisma and a properly run NIl for basketball... which there is still plenty of zeal around for our hoops program.  Football is the new girl in town for sure and it isn't going anywhere but basketball is an Indiana love and staple. Doorknob can't do it.

I am still riding high on football and knowing we will lose by 20 tonight its hard to even care. I guess in two years when mr personality is fired we can have some hope again maybe unless the screw up that hire again.

Its not happening after 1 year, its just not. Way too expensive.

I'll never understand coach contracts: "You suck, but here's a $20M parting gift." If I sucked at my job, I'd just get walking papers and a box. I don't condone collusion, but ADs should get together to stop this madness.

@gthomas Seems like it should be more like "here's a big bonus if you succeed" rather than guaranteed money and a buyout clause. The buyout made sense when transfers were rare and you had to build a team from high school recruits. That could take years. Maybe with the portal, NIL, and examples of coaches like Cig and others who were successful immediately, this will start to change?

@ams66 I think we'll see more low buyout, high incentive contracts, going forward.  I think the buyouts, in the past, were justified as ways to help ensure coaches get more stable years to build a program... which was always pitched as a necessity to recruiting high level players.  Portal, NIL, etc... have changed that dynamic quite a bit.

Devries could have this clearly heading in the right direction next season. Going to take a ton of work on his end for recruitng donors and players both. But he could do it.

If so, the third year will be fine. If not, depressing.

This year is looking like a lost cause unless some lineup shakeup or some amazing Xs and Os changes miraculously turns things around.

That is what I am hoping for, the miraculous performance out of the blue. I still remember how to root that way from the Tom Allen years and other football years. It almost never bears fruit, but I still know how to do it.

It doesn't look good now.  There's no way to argue that.  One of my bigger concerns is that the team might be in the early stages of mailing it in.  All of them got a bag to come here.  Most of them are done with college ball after this year.  Only a couple have any real, higher level, professional potential.

CDD isn't going to get fired.  I guess who cares if you keep harping on it.  But it isn't happening.  And it shouldn't happen.  Go back and read Florida and UConn message boards in Golden and Hurley's first years.  Neither is a perfect apples for apples comp to CDD, but neither had any more success than CDD had before they got their elite P4 shot.  And both were very, very mediocre their first seasons.  Dynamics, philosophies, etc... changed for them after their first years, and they got their programs headed in the right direction.  CDD 100% could figure similar things out and make that happen at IU.

And before someone comes back with... its different today, NIL and the portal changes everything...  That is obviously true, to an extent... but NIL today isn't the same as it was a year or two ago.  Rev sharing, higher levels of parity, all of those things are shifting... and CDD didn't have nearly the same budget that Woodson had, relative to other elite level teams... AND he had to build an entire roster.  The very real comebacks to those realities would involve a Ben McCollum comparison...and the concerns that DeVries doesn't often bring staff, or players with him.  Why??  That's a key element to the success of guys like Cignetti, and what McCollum has done in the past.

I think the last point is evolving in to my biggest concern with CDD.  Not his coaching abilities, he's already proven he can coach the game.  He's proven he can get his team to get better as a season progresses, to battle through adversity, etc... I don't personally think he's a "door knob" personality.  He's Will Ferrell compared to Archie and/or Woodson, in my opinion.  His sense of humor is dry, but its there.  And he's a famously hard worker.  But something about him... has led to people not consistently following him from school to school.  That's very concerning, to me.

We will lose tonight, in all likelihood.  It probably won't end up being close.  I won't be watching it because I have my boys HS games to attend.  But even if we lose by 40, its not further evidence that he'll be fired after one year.

Maybe sign more then 4/5 (Devries/Wilkerson/Conerway/Alexis/Sisley) P4 players.  I don't know what it looks like for basketball, but it certainly seams like not enough P4 talent is on the team.  I don't know if that was an oversight by Devries or there was a priority placed on football.  If that's the case, I can understand it but Devries needs to get the funding or sign the right players.

I really think the Nebraska choke job broke this team.  Win that and we maybe beat Iowa and make the dance.  I expect things to go downhill fast now.

@dbmhoosier yes I agree this is not going to get turned around this season.  Next year could possible be better if he hits a grand slam in the portal but that is long shot imo.  Two guys return that play some minutes and that is it. The rest of the team will all be guys who have not played a minute in an IU uniform.  The fact is we are one of the oldest teams in the nation but we are built for the MAC.

"IF" is a big word.  If my aunt was my uncle she'd have balls. If a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his ass every tome he jumped.

He likely won't get fired after this year. Doesn't mean he shouldn't.  LSU just paid Brian Kelly 56m.  20m isn't that crazy in the scheme of things.
"team has improved as the season has gone on "?????!  I don't see that at all. I think they have gotten worse.
he hasn't gotten anyone to stay bought in, they are on the verge of the 1-7 collapse I predicted. They've seemingly packed it in.. that's on him.  His job to motivate and keep them held accountable.

I don't see where he's proven he can coach at this level.  I see more signs of it than Bigfoot but that's not saying much.

his personality is an issue , he's not wooing too many players  with that dry uncharismatic door knob personality.

He's a flop.  We settled for the safe and cheaper option.
I think Cig could do a better job coaching the basketball team. Seriously.

and I agree with some of your points or comparisons to Hurley and Golden and it's in retrospect but there's a charm to both of those guys ... like them or not they have swag that DD doesn't

I too won't be able to watch as I'll be at my sons HS game tonight

Should have just kept Bigfoot another year and taken more time to finally get this right.
