I haven't paid all that much attention to the national college basketball scene this year, but all the portal talk got me interested enough in the portal to take a look at how the top 20 247 portal prospects are doing.....ranking each of them as a stud or dud relative to expectations, it looks like this to me...
1. Y. Landeborg, Michigan.......Stud
2. PJ Haggerty, KSU...............Stud
3. B. Stirtz, Iowa...................Stud
4. D. Dent, UCLA...................Dud. Getting a boatload of assists but shooting very poorly
5. D, Williams, NC State.........Dud
6. Boogie Fland, Florida..........Dud
7. Ian Jackson, St. John's.......Dud
8. Rob Wright III, BYU...........Stud
9. Adrian Wooley, UL.............Stud
10. Jayden Quaintance, UK......Dud
11. Moustapha Thiam, Cincy....Dud
12. Jacobi Gillespie, TENN.......Stud
13. Silas Demary, U CONN......Stud
14. Ryan Conwell, UL.............Stud
15. Dedan Thomas, LSU.........Stud
16. Byrce Hopkins, St. Johns...Stud
17. Keyshawn Hall, Auburn......Stud
18. T. DeVries, Indiana............Interesting call here. Looking at his stats from Drake, I never thought of him as being worthy of being rated this high. And his #s at IU, if you look at them, are very close to his stats at Drake. 3% or so lower on 3s, but you might expect that given the tougher competition. And his % on 2 pt shots is about 3 pts higher than at Drake. So from my point of view, we probably overpaid for him, but his production is almost exactly what should have been reasonably expected.
19. Josh Dix, Creighton...........Dud
20. Chad Baker-Mazara, USC...Stud
Two guys that I really hoped IU would get, Conwell and Gillespie, from MD, are doing very well. Wilkerson's #s are very similar to those of Conwell, so we did well there, but we would have been much better had we gotten Gillespie instead of Conerway.
I think Wilkerson is a surprise of the portal, in that he was rated in the 40s and was coming from Sam Houston St. His #s at IU are even better than at SHS. He did shoot .455 on 3s last year there, but his present # is very close to his career %, and his 2 pt % is 5-6 points higher. I know UK wanted him badly, and there was a lot of talk about him, but he has exceeded expectations.
Michigan did amazingly well, getting Landeborg, Cadeau, Mara & Johnson. Nebraska got Sandfort & Lawrence.. USC's whole line-up is transfers. Cluff from Purdue, Tyson from MN, Stujakovic for Illinois, Paynee at MD until hurt
Good post
Devries seems to do so much not related to stats. He clearly spaces the floor whether his .pct is down or not due to the tougher competition . He can't really be left open. He often faciltates the offense attacking the paint. To me, he is not not a glue guy but a super glue player for this team. I'd put him in the stud category.
Swaim on Texas who came with Sean miller from X has been outstanding and clearly a stud. Starting to show up in late first round mock drafts.
Getting a boatload of assists but shooting very poorly
I take the hockey viewpoint, an assist is as good as a goal.
Based on expectations, I'd say TD is more dud than stud. If I recall correctly, more than a few on here were predicting 1st Team All-B1G. The reality is he'll probably be Honorable Mention. Percentages of 39/33 for IU's so-called best shooter coming into the season ain't good.
Wilkerson should be 1st Team, so I suppose everything evens out.
My assessment of all the Hoosier transfers out.
All duds except for Reneau whom is a stud this season.
From 50,000 viewpoint though, a recruit of Malik's pedigree and talent who plays all four seasons and doesn't lead his team to the tournament, (possible), and doesn't show up somewhere on an All American team, is underperforming expectations.
Jury is still out on Mgbako, it is mildly humorous he wanted to be a one and done and with this seasons likely medical redshirt, he'll be playing 5 college seasons.
Collecting checks at A&M this season.
Honestly wouldn't surprise me if he transferred again this off-season if A&M diminishes his cash. Kansas or Duke seems like a potential spot to overpay for his possible upside this off-season.
A shooter who's a below average defender would fit well at IU.Honestly wouldn't surprise me if he transferred again this off-season if A&M diminishes his cash.
MM should stay in college as long as possible to make as much money as possible. If he plays his cards right, he could get 7 or 8 years. It's not like the NCAA has eligibility rules these days.Honestly wouldn't surprise me if he transferred again this off-season if A&M diminishes his cash.
Kansas might disagree about Thiam being a dud based on game saturday..
@middawg Yep. Any school with a Taco Bell nearby is in good shape to get him.
