IU Exhibition vs. Marian - October 17

IU sent out a social media post revealing the opponent and date for a home exhibition game...October 17 versus Marian. If you recall, IU played Tennessee in a charity exhibition on October 27 and there are rumors that a similar exhibition will occur against a high-major opponent, possibly at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

IU beat Marian 106-64 last season on November 1 so this game is two weeks earlier. The regular season is scheduled to tip off against November 5 against Alabama A&M.

@tjinman1987 Have you heard anything about Hoosier Hysteria? If they plan to do it, or let it fade? It does seem like it's losing it's interest and appeal to the fanbase, but honestly, if there was a year for it, you'd have thought an entirely new staff and roster might've been the time. I thought it was always a recruiting tool, so from that perspective, I hate to see it go. I wonder if UK and KU are still doing MM type events?

@kkott Last year they tied it into Homecoming which would be Oct. 18th. Would seem late with a 10/27 exhibition. I will ask around on Saturday.

UK has their event October 10th, KU October 3rd.

Not sure what we're planning to do or how much it matters for recruiting nowadays.

@tammany Trust in CDD! But, like I said, if there was a time to have one, to me it's this year with an entirely new roster and staff. I'd have done it this year I think and then decided if we wanted it to continue.

@kkott There are some discussions occurring about the "Hoosier Hysteria" event and I do think it will occur. I've heard that it's probably not going to be some sort of big event with a concert and a bunch of pyro, etc. Rather, it would be more of a "meet the team" and scrimmage type of event and I would not be surprised if they included some sort of autograph opportunity. There appears to be a fairly long break between the exhibitions and IU's first regular season game so maybe it gets squeezed in there as a reincarnated version of the "Haunted Hall of Hoops" event from the Crean era?

I heard from a pretty connected source that something might be in the works that is way outside the box, but no date was tied to that and there were a lot of logistics that would need to be ironed out to make it happen.  Sorry for the vagueness, I'm just not at liberty to give much more detail.

Outside the box sounds interesting.  The Hoosier Hysteria, Big Blue Madness, etc. thing is pretty tired and long in the tooth at this point.

Yeah, if UK and KU are still doing them, and we have an all new staff and team, I think it's worth doing, especially if they can find some new twist or angle on it, and it draws in the recruits they want. I kind of doubt that it will get the top-tier, 5 star types, or at least in any #s, but in a state like IN that produces a ton of talent, I'd focus on the local kids that are drawing some D1 interest, just in case you have to dip into that pool.

I love our women's program, but I think that dilutes the interest in the Men's program and it should be just the men's program and include a scrimmage. Keep it under 2 hours. I thought the concert might help draw kids, but I hope they do it for at least 1 more year.

Last year attendance was pretty light, but it was still 7K or so.  Can’t hurt to do another Hoosier Hysteria.

Not sure recruits care much nowadays — they probably focus more on NIL, staff, actual gameplay/current player development, projected roster, national exposure, facilities etc. much more than some event with fancy intros and a scrimmage.  Just my $0.02.

Personally, I am 100x more interested in our Baylor scrimmage.  I’m very glad we scheduled that to prepare for the year.

@tammany Was HH the night before Nebraska last year?  I was going to throw out that with the football team being more hyped this year, potential for more fans if HH is before a football game?  But I'm not sure Bloomington has ever been more hyped than it was for Nebraska and Washington weekends, last season.

Maybe they could have it a couple hours before the start of the Oregon football game, and have a big "watch party" after the HH event, in Assembly Hall for the students and fans?

That's a really long time to be sitting in one place... but might bring quite a lot of students in?

@iunorth It was before one of Nebraska or UW.  Nebraska I think.

The more creativity with the event the better.  It’s probably more for the fans at this point.  The Hysterics used to have an event with a player meet and great and autographs — maybe incorporate that without the HH of course.

Back to the thread title!  I repeat what I said last year.  How does scheduling Marian make us a better team?  Does it boost our ranking?  Do our players learn how to compete against B10 competition?  Does our team learn cohesiveness against a skilled opponent?

This match is a total waste of everyone’s time and effort.

i do look forward to the Baylor exhibition.

@fred-c-dobbs it allows you to build depth with players who wouldn’t normally see the floor. Exhibition games don’t affect rankings at all. Look at last year. IU basically doing a local team a favor, helping fund their department and get to play a game. If it’s not entertaining enough, don’t watch.
