usual offering? Their game is competitive, but never gets them far in the NCAA.

We're the Hoosiers. We're (almost) back. Indiana wins titles! Basketball royalty. They're not.

The question is how will Wisconsin basketball differ from Purdue's?

I like the cut of your jib.

I read through this a few different times and I just don't understand the question...Darian DeVries and Greg Gard don't really have any commonalities. Stylistically, I guess you could see some similarities based on the way Wisconsin played this past season but lots of teams play quickly and stretch the floor so even that is a stretch. Sorry if I missed the point of your post.

I think the apt question would be: what if IU basketball over the next decade resembles Creighton's program? DeVries considers McDermott a mentor and the styles they play and type of player they recruit tend to be similar.

Over the past decade, Creighton finished no worse than fourth in the league, won it once and finished second three other times. They reached the tournament in 7 of the 8 seasons it was held (COVID cancelled one), reached two Sweet Sixteens and then one Elite Eight. If DeVries has results that look like that...how do the majority of IU fans feel?

@tjinman1987  Honestly, if that's his resume in 10 years, I would be disappointed.  1 Big Ten title in 10 years... no Final Fours, let alone Nattys...  I would say that without factoring in likability, style, etc... that would be a more consistently decent version of what Crean did, with less high end success.

I know IU isn't entitled to anything.  But it "should" be able to be better than that over the next 10 years.

@tjinman1987 It was a question asking for opinions, and I thank you for yours.

@iunorth I would imagine IF we had that kind of consistency then deep NCAAT runs would come with it.

Crean showed he could build a few teams that could have made a deep run but they were few and far between and the team fell off a cliff in the down years. Crean's abrasive and scatter-brained personality had also started tanking recruiting let alone ticking off a lot of ppl who had to work with him or around him. We didn't even have a set practice time under the guy as his wife was busy micro-managing his schedule for him.

He showed you could land good talent and build teams here, so if DDV can show more consistency and recruit well without all of Crean's baggage then I think we could be in a really good spot in a couple of years.

AFA comparisons to Wisconsin, that seems pre-mature. Gard changed some things last year but its hardly how they have played most of his tenure. He also inherited a high-level program from Bo that he was allowed to coast in for several years prior.

If DD is no better than Creightons run the last 10 years I'll be thoroughly pissed.  In fact he doesn't get past year 5 with that nonsense IMO. Or that's what we should be thinking.  I'm not interested in middle of the pack .:, I want to hang banners.

@hoosiers94 Creighton's results have been far from middle of the pack. I think they've been pretty astounding really to move up from the MVC to the Big East and contend near the top is impressive. They've had to assemble the resources to compete at that level, where we already have those resources in place. I'd certainly like another conference title or 2 and at least 1 F4 run, but we've not sniffed results like those in 30 years.

@kkott Just because we haven't sniffed those types of results since RMK, doesn't mean its now "acceptable" to go 10 years winning only 1 B10 title, and never making a final four.  Indiana has the resources, as you say.  There are a number of examples of coaches rebuilding schools to elite levels, that were down, even smoldering ashes of programs.  Hurley at UConn, Golden at Florida, as recent examples.  Obviously its possible that any coach could have moderate success for 10 years, THEN figure it out and start winning hardware.  Painter follows that mold somewhat with his recent emergence.  But practically, we'll know long before 10 years, whether or not CDD, or anyone else, is the coach to get IU back to competing for conference and national titles.

@kkott middle of the tournament pack.  I would be completely unsatisfied with those results

@iunorth

Hurley and Golden took over programs that won national championships more recently than IU.

u-conn won titles in 99, 04, 11 and 14.  They were an elite program before Hurley added a couple of trophies.

Florida won the Donovan titles in 2006 and 2007.

It’s not just a dry spell for IU, it’s 38 years.  It would be one thing if IU had won a title under some other coach 10 or 15 years ago.  It’s looking more and more like IU has won their last title.

sure, we have resources.  But, being MBB at IU is one of the toughest jobs in all of sports.

I may be in the minority here, but I think Dolson whiffed by not getting McCollum. I'll die on this hill until proven otherwise.

@tjinman1987 that would be much more enjoyable than what we have become used to, but not enough.

there should not be a season where IU is t safely in the dance. Maybe if IU were endure a couple key injuries, but w the resources at hand, IU should be a tourney staple moving forward!

That's who I wanted too.  I think he's gonna to win at Iowa and make them a regular tournament team. But Devries is our coach now, and I'm optimistic about that.
