@tammany I would bet Ben does better than Drock.  Hope not, but that’s where smart money would go.

Recruiting will be the difference. Ben may be the better coach but can he pull in the bigger recruits compared to DRock. Time will tell

@pryght dusty was an epic miss.  Will be talked about like Brad Steven’s.  Only IU Fs that up twice.  No school has ever screwed up worse.

Don't forget passing on Pitino and Matta for Mike Davis.  Passing on Beilein for Sampson.  Not hiring Stevens after year 3 of Crean.  We could go on forever.   It's been one abomination after another for 25 years.  Sucks for Devries who I really like but his success or failure will absolutely be determined in large part to how he does in comparison to Dusty and BM.

I'm not worried about Iowa. They'll have a team some years, they'll get a decent share of wins even head to head. Make some deep runs probably. I like their coach a lot.

But long term, that won't stop the Hoosiers. The program DeVries builds at Indiana - 'It's Indiana' - will sway the big-time recruits we need. Or $way the recruit$. And he can coach too.

Michigan I expect to be an elite program as well as us though.

For me, ^^^ is it. IU admin has eff’d up so bad for so long, D’rock is starting 10 yrds behind the starting line as far as fan expectations and it has NOTHING to do with him. I hope he has the mentality to quietly say. EFF you fans, and simply go produce.

I may be a little more enthusiastic about Hoosier fans eating crow, COLD, than an overly successful first year.
If you are not capable of accepting your faults, your negative reply’s are not welcome.
WE as fans need to improve on our critique. NOT that critique hasn’t been warranted. It’s the tone.

If men were any more stupid, we would have breed for the extinction of women. Proof yet again that WE are the best thing they have going for them.

@tjinman1987 So far this team seems to have balanced scoring which I always like.

While I regarded God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so, and sought my good.” C. H. Spurgeon

I’m one of the few here still not sold on Dusty. Over half of his wins last season were decided by 4 points or fewer, including 12 such victories in Big Ten play. When you compare that to other successful B1G coaches like RMK, Keady, or Izzo, none of them ever came close to that many narrow wins in a season. Most averaged only around two per year;

So you aren't sold on Dusty May because you don't think he's as good as the 3 best Big Ten coaches in history?

I don't think that sucks for him. Every coach will be measured against their peers who took over jobs around the same time, and versus their rivals (Painter). Devries wasn't my first (or second) pick, but I like almost everything he's done since he's been here. And, it's great to have a coach who sounds thoughtful, well-spoken and competent in interviews, vs hyper/nutty (Crean), prickly (Archie) or defensive and combative (Woodson's last 2 years). CDD sounds almost too nice, but I think has shown he can be intense on the bench and in practices/locker room. But, he took the IU gig and knows what comes with that and is expected, which is to compete at the top of the conference and win it occasionally, and advance in the tourney. That will require more than holding his own vs UM, IA and PU. Beating IA and finishing ahead of them this year would help quiet the Nervous Nellys. I don't see finishing ahead of PU or UM this year, but closing the gap sure would be nice.

Of course CDD is going to get compared against Ben and Dusty, and also Pope and Kelsey who are one year ahead in their "blue blood" rebuilds.  That’s fine, CDD has to perform and those are his peers that have some similarity in their situations.

What’s going to get old is every bump in the road season, and those are coming with a brand new team, we’ll get some people crying about Dusty and Ben.  It’s pretty pointless, Quinn blocked any chance of Dusty, and people overlook that Ben didn’t seem enthused about the IU job.  And regardless, we can’t hire them now.

I think this was Pryght’s point.  And yes, I know the Ben and Dusty talk will be coming regardless, even if CDD does a very good job.  It is what it is.

Don't care a hoot about Meatchicken, Iowa no matter who is the coach.  My focus is on the north side of Bloomington.  My $ is on DD and after the W against the Serb pro outfit our HCing position is in good hands cause coaching made that W happen.

Will this be the same game thread for today's game, and are you planning to update it as the game progresses again?

@kkott new one is being launched here in a minute for today's game and yes, I'll be updating it as the game progresses. What else is everyone else going to do on a Monday late morning/early afternoon...work? HA!

What CDD has done with a completely new roster in 4 months is pretty amazing

Woodson coached teams would’ve mailed it in the second half of those last two games.

Those teams were so badly coached it’s ridiculous, these kids seem very coachable and have a point to prove.

I’ve read comments that it’s going to be a repeat of Crean’s first year, not even close. They will take some beatings along the way but they won’t flat out quit like the previous 5 years,we have a basketball coach, give him a couple years,he will have this program winning again.

@ccmac all of these things are possible, but we're less than a year removed from a Woodson coached IU team heading in to Knoxville, and coming back to beat a top 15 level Tennessee team in a scrimmage.  And afterwards, many of us gushing about the toughness and grittiness the team demonstrated.

I do like the style it sounds like we played with.  And the possibilities that presents.  And obviously the resiliency to come back by 20+ points, against a solid team.

But plenty of recent examples of times like these, to have guarded optimism.

Yep, the comparisons will be there but doing them in real-time in year 1 after every possession/game will get tiresome.

DDV will either sink or swim on his own regardless of what the others are doing (some of whom are going to be successful regardless of DDV as well).

Archie fell flat because he stunk, not because Chris Holtmann was 'better' but you had ppl constantly posting about how we missed on Holtmann from day 1 up until Holtmann was finally fired for being mediocre. Heck, you had ppl talking up Mack as well back then the first couple years.

Dusty, Pope and Kelsey all have a year+ head start. BMc is a hard comparison outside of timing. Styles and programs top-to-bottom are way too different for much of a true comparison early on imo.
