I'm gonna give it another year before I start going apeshit about the hire. He put together a bad roster without a lot depth at the 3 and nothing at the 4 and 5.
I have heard some troubling things about his management, coaching and leadership style. I think we're seeing the results.
Such as?
I've got a second degree connection with one of his previous staff members. He doesn't do a good job running a program or managing NIL expectations. There's a reason no one came with him to Indiana and only a couple of guys followed him from Drake. Not bringing assistants impacted recruits who decided to make other decisions and the portal. The guy was one man band for a long time before the current staff came together. You guys have seen his demeanor in pressers and in game. It's not any different behind closed doors.
Well, his main assistant was a poison pill, no? A well known IU lifetime hater who never would have came here and almost certainly made sure all current players felt the same way. This is something I put on Dolson. He should have avoided any candidates who couldn't bring their entire staff (or most of it) along with a core of players.
He can build his staff. And core of players.
Best to leave behind anyone that doesn't love IU, because clearly they are a few bricks short.
The earlier comment:

Is a little too vague for me...
But he does seem to be off on the wrong foot with this roster. And a couple here said NIL or salaries offered, hurt putting together his staff and bringing a former player. (?) Maybe he needs a GM type. I assume we have staff doing that?. So over time the roster and NIL management could improve.
@openwheel If there's any truth to him getting a fairly fixed budget for his roster, without much flexibility from donors or the collectives... then I give him more than a little bit of leeway on the roster construction. And without taking the concerns away that I have with how this team is playing... I would also lay a fair bit of blame on the roster with Dolson. How you could go from having a coach like Woodson, who was getting tons of NIL support to build a very talented roster... to firing him, and hiring in a new coach, and NOT doing everything in your power to help ensure he had the financial resources to compete at the top of the conference/nation... well, that'd be beyond me. Again, if that's how it went down. And even if that budget was 10 ish million. Which is obviously a substantial budget. But when the market for good big men would have been over 20% of your entire budget, if not 30%, for one player, its not hard to see how CDD landed on less caliber guys like Bailey, Alexis, and Harris.
As I said in a different post... lets see how he, Clark, and Johnson do this next go around in the portal, foreign kids, and late HS signees. Even if the budget is exactly the same, he'll have learned some lessons, I'm sure, and will be building nearly half his roster, this time, with guys that should be "less expensive" in the returning guys and the incoming freshmen. So going after that 2 million+ dollar big, PG, and/or wings will be easier.
But I suspect with football's success, and what limitations basically everyone can see this BBall roster has... Dolson will figure out how to get CDD a bigger, and more flexible NIL budget to work with. He's an awful boss, and leader, if he doesn't. Now... if he does... what will CDD do with that? I'm anxious to find out.

Dolson knew what the NIL resources were very likely going to be when he went searching for a new coach. There was no mystery there.
Likewise, DeVries knew what he was walking into. There was no bait and switch.
We have a roster who were lead guys at the mid-major level, but they’re not close to high level guys in P4/P5. That’s our reality. Nonetheless, DeVries will get three years.
They didnt know what prices were going to be. Escalate to. Dolson should have known or had a way to figure it out. DeVries was busy coaching a team.
Cig didnt know. IU had a number, he came over. But when prices went up, the winter he was hired, IU seemed to have gone over what was committed to. Cig said - more than I was promised... And called it very good.
Did they give DeVries more than he was promised?
Im not saying DeVries would have been smart enough to insist on a certain top 6 commitment like Cig was smart enough to though. Devries probably figured - Its Indiana! so assumed.
@surjay you asked and I answered. Frazier would have come if his recruits and himself hadn't been lowballed. Why do you think we had no staff for so long? WVU to IU. It's not because we didn't have money.

Sorry. That's all I'm gonna put out there, but I have heard the details. I'm not some new guy. I've never been a throw shit and see what sticks kind of poster. I know what I was told and I've known the guy who told me since Little League in the 70s and hoops in the 80s

Well, if your friend knew a friend who ran a high end basketball program. Then thats it. j/k
Never heard why the lowball. I assumed it meant we didnt have it. If thats not true, then Devries apparently didnt want him, at least enough. Why else?

Why exactly would ddv do this? Makes zero sense which makes it seem completely suspect and not believable. Self sabotage? I find it hard to believe.
That's been my thought as soon as it was suggested it was probable happening. Just more mud thrown.
Not sure if we have a recruit tracker, but one of the post game shows I listened to last night mentioned another commit we had, who's name I didn't recognize and I don't see any mentions on the page. I know we have Branham and Karvala for next year, is there now a 3rd commit? Details?

Prince-Alexander Moody
@kkott I haven't seen or heard that Branham has reclassed to 26? It seemed to be something that could happen, when he committed. But haven't heard that it IS happening.
As of now... IU has Alexander-Moody and Karvala committed. And most think we'll get a commitment from Trevor Manhertz today, who is currently a 27 kid, that IS likely going to be reclassing to 26.
If Branham also reclasses, that gives us 4 really solid guard/wing guys in the 26 class. We'll need to add a PG and some bigs in the offseason... but CDD's roster plans are starting to take shape. And I'm pretty impressed with how balanced he's been able to make the classes in such short order.
And he should have a little more money, and hopefully a little more flexibility, to go get some truly elite level players this offseason.

I think another factor in his roster construction was not so much money but players were visiting and no coaches were on the staff yet. How can you commit when you don't know who is going to coach you? Cig made a joking comment before his season that some of his NIL money went to the basketball team. Who knows unless we were there. IMO DeVries was behind the 8 ball in recruiting because of his staff not complete and 12 new players. Players did not know who they were going to play with when they visited. I was a little surprised none of the WV players came with him.
@iubhounds Having very few coaches or players following him from Drake to WVU to IU, is an odd, and concerning, thing for me. It seems like he's pretty much universally liked and respected by people that have closely followed him, peer coaches, etc... But for whatever reason, he either doesn't bring people with him, or people don't want to follow him.
It'll be interesting what the 7 guys that can return next year do. And if the entire staff stays intact.
