Shit we're old

That's a good thing as it relates to IU basketball; we remember the great times. Youngsters think Bigfoot's TJD/JHS team is the pinnacle of Hoosier hoops.

Coach thanked Buckner for his support, after the game. So he doesn't (at least not publicly) have the same dim view as we do on these boards.

Lol, well I hope he wouldn't publicly blast the former BoT president.

Buckner used to be the BoT Prez, he still is, but he used to be too.

@spartans9312 I'm not referring to what they did in uniform; I'm referring to what they did in suits. There's no denying those two grifters nuked the program; it's not subjective.

There wasn’t a program to nuke at the time. I hated the way Woody coached and his coaching staff was terrible….but to act like he ruined some good thing is wrong

Pardon my language, but are you f---ing serious? College basketball was entering a new era, and a horrible former coach hired another former horrible coach who no other school would even consider. Your "there was nothing to nuke" argument is...

Nevermind. I best not finish that sentence.

You’re insinuating we had a thriving program that the hire ruined. That’s horseshit. The hire happened because a large portion of the fanbase wanted someone connected to Knight hired. That’s why you got Woody. The program died when Knight was fired. Now it’s up to someone to resurrect it. Devries is now up but you condemned him before he coached his first game.

@hooky Buckner is still on the BoT but is no longer the Chairman.

@ams66 Thanks.  I thought he'd been appointed chair again.

A situation like this reminds me of a time about 30 years ago when I read about the passing of Red Grange, who died in his 90s.  The story was just a brief mention of his death, as time had essentially passed him by.  Voted the greatest college football player of all time.  And his death hardly noticed.  That made an impression.

I think great accomplishments like '76 (or this year's IU football team) have a total shelf life of about 50 years, and then they belong totally to history.  That said, they still have some current power as long as the school stays competitive.  IU is still more like Nebraska football than Minnesota football.  Minnesota had tremendous success in the 1940s but nobody believes it will ever win another championship.  IU basketball and Nebraska football are not hopeless yet, but won't have staying power much longer.

It was way worse than that. An absurd hire on all levels. A 65 year old with NO collegiate coaching experience? One who had not been a head coach at ANY level in 10 year? (and was a failed NBA coach and journeyman assistant in mid-retirement).

This was a grift, pure and simple. The old timers think they own the program and everybody needs to kiss the rings while they put in NO effort recruiting or actually coaching. Just partying with like-minded cronies while grifting money from donors and the university. Complete sham.

I'll agree to an extent that things weren't rosy when Bigfoot was hired nor were they top shelf when Bucktooth was elected to the Board. But it doesn't allow for countinued stupidity or lack of leadership and respect for the University.  Their accomplishments were great but those don't allow them to hijack the program to do what they wish without repercussions.  And that's what they did for too long. Hopefully now folks see their stupidity and their selfishness and don't allow them the access they once had.  Bucktooth is the worst perpetrator IMO.  He had the power and the influence.  Bigfoot just got to benefit from it as a puppet
