Coach thinks we.re good.Illinois just added a big man that is eligible to play come January. Why can't we do that?
I dont know. First Ive heard of that bizarre rule. We shouldve or should take advantage of it.
,
I hope having his boy on the team isn't affecting his coaching. I mean that blocked dunk should've had the boy benched awhile.
We've seen good plays drawn up, we've seen some good ball movement, we've seen him get some mid-game changes out of players.
But he has this milquetoast vibe at those times when we see the team without energy, slow telegraphed passes, not finishing. I guess it's just not him to get in his guys' faces. Or, at Kentucky, the officials... He just took it.
I have hope. Coach knows the game. That Kentucky loss bothers me a lot more than Minnesota though. At least the gophers had stretches where they played tough. Kentucky looked like - oh wow, you are going to let us sleepwalk and play like shit and still beat you? Cool!
There's zero chance they fire a coach after 1 year without a scandal. People hoping for that should just stop watching and move on. You wouldn't be able to hire anybody with that policy. There's also no way Dolson ran off Woodson with all the baggage that entailed to hire a coach he fires 1 year later.
Zero chance, here or any other major program. Its not happening.
@iunorth if we are an 8 seed this year we will give coach a 10 year contract who are you kidding??? That would be over achieving big time. We will be lucky to even be on the bubble.

Right, so we are stuck with shit basketball until at least 2028 while Dusty kills it.
@iugradman Dusty isn't coming here so whats your point? Email Quinn Buckner about that as its 100% his fault Dusty isn't coaching here and NEVER will.
Firing DDV today does absolutely nothing to rectify that in any way.
i no longer believe that. Cig changed all that old school proper BS we used to operate by. We have momentum as an athletic program. Strike while it's hot. Any big time coach with an ego will jump. Besides with exit clauses they all go home rich. Not the same world anymore. If he continues to put below grade performances up I would not put it past them.

I think you are lowering the bar to judge DDs first season on to a really, really low level.
suggesting that this team would be lucky to even “make” the bubble is very low. Note - I always believed that there is a difference between expectations and predictions.
my expectations with this staff, this roster and our schedule is that if we don’t make the tournament, that we will be underperforming.
On a side note: my expectations are raised, not lowered , by our roster. I don’t mean the talent on our roster, but I am referring to a completely new team filled with experienced starters. We didn’t go the status quo route that Woodson took. Everyone here remembers millers last season, and Woodson’s first. DD chose to do away with the status quo. He chose to build this team (for this season) around several new to IU players that will be gone next year.
You don’t get throw away years in the portal nil era. Even if next years roster is better, that is no excuse for this year. This season for DD is his most important. It is the one that he should be scrutinized the most one. Especially as there are no guarantees that he will get four years, three years, or even a second year (though I fully expect him to get a second).
@hoosiers94 Baylor has been far from a squeaky clean, program... I'm sure he had resources. When it was all leveled out via portal and NIL, he has started falling off. Why, on earth, fire a coach that could be on an upward trajectory, for a coach that could be on a downward trajectory? Because he had some elite teams around Covid? Nah. Fire DeVries for a guy like May, or Stevens maybe, or Donovan maybe... not for someone like Drew, or Beard, or Tony Bennett...
@hoosiers94 No, no big coach nor small coach will jump with the understanding they'll be fired after 1 year if cranky fans aren't happy. You're insane if you actually believe that.
Big coaches with egos? How many of them have bounced around recently? UofL, UK, and Mich all were just open and none of them hired a big name coach. UNC and Duke elevated assistants as well.
The old mentality that needs to go away is thinking the top established coaches will jump at these opportunities in this new era. They won't, there's no reason to anymore. They sure as heck won't do it for a 1 year contract either.
Cig is silly to keep bringing up. He is a unicorn. That is the exception, not the norm. Look at all the P5 football coaches who were just fired. How many of those teams are going to be the #1 seed within 2 years with their new hires? I'd wager none of them and I doubt they all fire their coaches after a year of not matching Cig.
you might be right we will see. But Bennet. No thanks I would shoot myself watching a team coached by him again. He's done anyway. Donovan not thanks either. Have you watched him coach the Bulls the last 5 years. He's done too. Stevens hasn't coached in college in over a decade don't think he's the same guy either.
@hoosiers94 you're probably right on all of them. May is probably the only one that is a sure fire, can't miss guy... Just advocating for our current coach a little bit. He's less than half way through his first season. But I've been out there with criticisms, and concerns. And certainly won't be advocating for this level of patience a whole heck of a lot longer.
But....... it appears like he is trying to implement a very modern, open, movement and passing based offense. I love that. And his high pressure defense I love as well. There are absolutely very good, exciting, tangible things happening with his program.
I made a post about Woodson early in his first year, about how I thought he needed to force a more modern style of play, even if it meant he'd lose a few more games. Maybe DeVries is in the process of doing that right now with his IU program? Maybe he's having a harder time getting guys like Conerway, Wilkerson, even his own son, to fully embrace the movement and passing? All 3 of those guys were ball dominant, conference player of the year players, in their recent past. Obviously we see the impacts his style of defense is having. Our current guys are struggling to play it, without fouling. But the result is they're a top 20 defensive effiiciency team, without a rim protector...and without a lot of athletic length on the wing. Why continue to play that way? Why not pack it back in, play some sort of packed man or packed matchup zone? I think because he's trying to establish our culture and identity.
We've seen flashes and stretches of what it could start to look like, more and more, as the current guys continue to buy in, and then as DeVries learns from his first roster mistakes, and brings in guys that might fit these styles a little better.
I'm NOT impressed with the inconsistency we're seeing right now, despite all I'm saying above. More so than roster construction, talent deficiencies, any of that... I'm worried about his ability to demand consistency in effort and focus. But it is early, and I'm willing to see how this year plays out. And then how he reacts this offseason. If we're having similar conversations like this next winter... if I care enough to still be posting, I'll be calling for his head, I'm sure.
For now... I'll react to the games as they happen. And I'll try to acknowledge both the good and the bad we're seeing.
I guess I could deal with this team and roster because of the need to put together a team quickly. If I felt like significant improvement was on the way, then this year is what it is. I'm just not sure I see any great recruits on the way? What will be different about next year. Right now IUBB is blah, if they win OK, if the lose whatever. UK game went exactly as expected, lost to a very mediocre team. IU can't win on the road, might as well count all those future road games as losses no matter who it is. Disappointing but yet normal now.
I always thought this was interesting. Clearly the coaching fraternity isn't high on DeVries.
