It’s got me worried. Especially since Coach Cig is from Pennsylvania.
It looks like Franklin’s buy out is $50 million. PSU may not fire him.
Also not really worried about Cignetti leaving IU at the moment.
Cignetti has no ties to Penn State, he has strong ties to Pitt and West Virginia
I’m not too worried here.
CrimsonCast did a good job addressing this. Their take is that it's much more than just the coach's buyout and new salary. I guess when Cignetti got his raise, he also got big raises for the entire staff, to the point that they are paid as well as almost any staff in the country. Think they said, maybe Bama's is higher. But they specifically addressed PSU, but also said that's a huge barrier to overcome for any program.
It also helps a little Cig doesn't like PSU. Again, this doesn't stop coaches from taking jobs, but it's just another little thing here in addition to a lot of others that makes me less worried about a move.
Another wrinkle that hasn't been mentioned above... PSU hired away Jim Knowles, for a lot of money, from OSU...and that hasn't exactly worked out well, so far. They might be a little skittish going forward throwing huge money at "can't miss" type guys.
**Also, if they can pay the 50 million dollar buyout, pay Cig's large buyout, and then pay an elite staff that I'm sure Cig would demand... That'd cover a lot of 5 Star NIL money.

Plus they are spending $700M on their stadium renovation, which regardless of how that's funded, has to be a cash drain to some extent.
@tammany I do think Indiana needs an elite football practice facility. But I think you've made the point recently that they should now focus as much of their overall money as possible at players and staff recruitment and retention.
Maybe a new Press box and concourse, depending on that cost. But for the next handful of years, give most of the money to players and coaches.
@kkott - Cig's buyout is 10 million. I believe that Haines and Shanahan both have buyouts over a million dollars each.
If Cig were to leave I'm sure one of those guys would get the IU job. But paying Franklin 50 million then sending IU 10 to 15 million for Cig and his staff is insanity.
@iunorth IU has solid facilities. Do they need to be updated? Yes, they have done that too. New turf and new lights have done wonders to Mellencamp. Could it look better from the outside? Yes, but as multiple people have said on here, players want money now and dumping millions into a practice facility may be silly, unless you can generate revenue from it (possible).
A new press box and suites is an absolute must. You go to any Big Ten stadium and the press box/suites are much nicer. I know people here get upset when us media folk say that, but it's just a fact. I don't need the Ritz, I just want more than one slow elevator, wifi that works consistently and some more toilets. The rest, make suites and sell the heck out of them.
Everything needs to have revenue generation in mind.
At this point in his career I just don’t see him leaving as long as the administration continues to support him the way they have.
He has built this thing from the ground up and I think he takes a lot of pride in that fact. Also I think the Mrs really likes it hear from all reports, happy wife happy life😉
If Cigs never figures out how to overcome crowd noise in big away games, will his seat get hot at IU due to the ever increasing level of expectations?
Given his age, he would likely retire before we would ever get to that point but something to ponder.
No, Cignetti’s seat will never get hot as long as he makes a bowl every season. I don’t think his ego would allow a losing season but the schedule the next two years is very tough.

Expectations rise when you constantly meet the old expectations.
That's when you see some big programs fire coaches that are constantly bowling but not winning conference/national championships.
I agree it's probably a slim chance as long as Cigs has us bowling.
