Last year was the first time as a family man I took the family to an IU game and did the tailgating and all.  So many years of kids sports on Saturday's, birthday parties, etc.  No complaints though, wouldn't have done it any differently.

Now that I have a sophmore down in Bloomington, a fresman at Loyola of Chicago and a sophmore daughter who's a huge IU sports fan we decided the time was right to invest in season tickets.  Not to mention IU is peaking at the right time for us.

So I bought a propane tank Paella pan kit.  This thing is pretty cool.  We went down to the Washington game.  I prepped all the vegetables, protein, spices, we grabbed some Shapiros on the way too, some Three Floyd's Gumballhead.  We had one of the most memorable fall days.

I can't wait to tailgate this year.  I'd love to hear about some of your next level tailgates.

Whatcha got?

That’s a great set up. I love the classic charcoal grill and brats. The weather will dictate the beverages. Hot games a summer ale, cold games and we go bourbon.

however, with working games it’s never more than one drink.

i did buy a solar generator for a small tv last year and it was great.

@thehoosierhuddle having never traveled with a charcoal grill what are the logistics and best practices?  I can see just having something short and small that will fit in my vehicle.   i've seen next level where people have grills attached safely (or not) in their trucks.  I don't have a truck so that's not an option.

@eppy99 something that folds. However, gas is just easier.

In years past, we would purchase a smaller $15 charcoal grill at Walmart and consider it disposable.  Leave it outside the car to cool down. If it was taken while in the game, less we had to pack.   Just dont put it UNDER your car to cool down, like I have seen.  Dangerous doing that near gas tanks.

@eppy99 How about an electrical inverter with the wattage output to operate an electric grill, or maybe even a TV or cooler. They are not expensive at all.

Co-sign this.  Works perfectly well and is low stress.

Other angle is to have some friends who bring a Blackstone and mooch off them (or trade booze for food).

I usually bring hashbrown casserole. Goes great with breakfast or burgers/brats/hot dogs.

There are some pretty cool grills that actually plug into the bumper hitch when the ball is removed.  Just a thought.  We tailgated for 40 plus years over in the Hoosier Hundred parking and really tried to avoid grill and such for the obvious safety issues but plenty of people go full out.

We are very basic.  We make ham & cheese or turkey and cheese sliders the night before and just have them on game day.  A Hoosier Gameday or early games a Twisted Tea then we bring chips and some cookies.  Easy to deal with and less mess.  We do have our chairs, table and music.  I have a 10 x 10 canopy but haven’t used it yet.  We are more likely to eat and then walk around than stay in the lot for hours.  We are Lot 12 so a little different vibe than the grass lots.

1 Beef Tenderloin or Flat Iron Steak

2. Hoosier Gameday/Bourbon/Mixed Drinks courtesy of a Bartesian.

3. Assorted chips & dips.

4. Music mix of everything.

5. College Gameday or early games on tv.

  • Mooch off of everyone else!
I park at the sorority and walk over, but a friend has a huge pitch in spread on the north side, so I pitch in something. He goes all out and they’ve won tailgate award several times. Did you know there’s a contest?

@kelly_32 I think when I made the Paella it must have been a 4pm game.  So I guess breakfast will be the menu at some point.  Could be a bagels and lunch gate.
