Wheeler literally ran by the quarterback to tackle the RB on the first play. The second long touchdown Wyatt bit on the dive and Joseph just planted his foot and took off. Fixable things.
Any defense is going to look bad when the Safetys get sucked up to the line.We saw it happen last year at ND and then twice on Saturday. When everyone goes to the ball as hard as these guys do there seems to be no one left once the runner breaks contain.
I'll say this - ODU has the fastest damn QB I've ever seen. He wasn't as quick as, say Randle El, but his straight-line speed was really - really - fast.
And one of the fake handoffs. Had me fooled many times, and many of our DLs.
I didn't think our Defense was as attacking as it was last year. Maybe that first play had us on our heels.
It will be interesting to see ODU play during the year.

It's going to take a few games for the coaches to see how some players fit in and play.@big-red-cb-v-2-0 yes, I was and still am concerned about how much we miss West and Walker. And remember that the defense got better last year when they inserted Terry Jones in. We have some good pieces but it may take a while for them to gel.
I don't particularly like our OoC schedule, but it serves a purpose.

Wyatt was horrible on Saturday. He and the DTs other than Wheeler were disappointments. I was happiest with Brady & Bond.
What were you watching? Wheeler wasn't disruptive and didn't do much, other than give up the first TD run b/c he didn't stay disciplined. He got graded at the bottom of the DL.
based on what? pff had landino, ratcliff and wyatt all below wheeler in overall grade.Wyatt was horrible on Saturday. He and the DTs other than Wheeler were disappointments. I was happiest with Brady & Bond.

Not on topic...
But I didn't see the dominant penetration we had last year. C.J. West was an NFL level stud, like Ohio State and Michigan always have. Carpenter didn't make a roster (yet) but he was great for us.
I think we'll be OK though. I feel like we have a bit more depth, it's just not as concentrated. We did thoroughly shut them down. So I can't say why we didn't 'feel' as explosive on the d-line. Maybe part of the game plan.
Kellen Wyatt's comments in the recent video made me nervous. He said camp was 'stressful'... Whereas most other players don't put it that way at all. Has me wondering if his role or the things Haines wants are so different from what Wyatt is used to. We do need him to play well. Hope he develops a great understanding, or Haines figures out the best uses for him.

Wyatt clearly appeared to be overthinking the game. When you do that, you play back on your heels. I thought he had a poor game and he has to play more instinctual going forward. If he doesn’t, he’ll progressively lose minutes.
Haines did a good job vs ND minus the 98 yard run and that was a blown assignment. And again this week with how spread out the ODU offense they’re trying to force less guys in the box so if someone misses an assignment there is less people to clean up the mistake. Can’t take out the rushing yards or say they didn’t happen but take out those 2 rushes they ran for as a team 3.1 YPC. That is really good for a team that wants to run the ball.

Where did you see those PFFs?
Wyatt: 64.1
Landino 61.7
Wheeler: 59.8

oh, i see where you got those numbers from, @jdb ...you got them from weaver on peegs.
i can't find where he got those numbers from. i don't typically show the pff website, but you can see they're not the same numbers weaver has.
