So is Haines defense vulnerable to the long run?

We saw it happen last year at ND and then twice on Saturday. When everyone goes to the ball as hard as these guys do there seems to be no one left once the runner breaks contain.

Not if the DL responsible for the gap stays home.  Finally watched the two plays on replay.  The first one you can see Wheeler look at the QB but not recognize he kept the ball and he chased after the running back leaving the hole.  The second run you can see the DE crash down and loose outside leverage.  Never should have come inside as far as he did.

Every defense is prone to long runs if guys don't have gap discipline.

It was game 1 for a lot of those guys, especially on the d line.  We'll be alright.

Haines will get the point across.  Emphatically!

If IU was being pushed around or outmatched, that would be one thing.  This was merely missed assignments.  Players not playing within Haines scheme.  Its absolutely correctable.

Not on topic...

But I didn't see the dominant penetration we had last year. C.J. West was an NFL level stud, like Ohio State and Michigan always have. Carpenter didn't make a roster (yet) but he was great for us.

I think we'll be OK though. I feel like we have a bit more depth, it's just not as concentrated. We did thoroughly shut them down. So I can't say why we didn't 'feel' as explosive on the d-line. Maybe part of the game plan.

Kellen Wyatt's comments in the recent video made me nervous. He said camp was 'stressful'... Whereas most other players don't put it that way at all. Has me wondering if his role or the things Haines wants are so different from what Wyatt is used to. We do need him to play well. Hope he develops a great understanding, or Haines figures out the best uses for him.

All I know is Kamara was eating the RB on every QB keeper, so it was the guy on the other side. They were running away from him.

Really hard to replace West, Carpenter and Jaylin Walker, not to mention Asbury, who was a huge part of that defense.

@big-red-cb-v-2-0 yes, I was and still am concerned about how much we miss West and Walker. And remember that the defense got better last year when they inserted Terry Jones in. We have some good pieces but it may take a while for them to gel.

Wyatt was horrible on Saturday.  He and the DTs other than Wheeler were disappointments.  I was happiest with Brady & Bond.

On the first run, the LB also vacated.  Moore saw it but the QB cut away from him and was gone.  On the second, I wouldn't say Wyatt crashed in....he came in cautiously, stopped and took one more forward step, and was screwed.  On that play the safety was tied up with coverage near the boundary, and both LBs were caught up in the middle.

There is a reason IU loaded up on DT in the 2026 class.

I think Haines defense is optimized as long as people know their assignments.

It works and is very effective when done right but does seem prone to giving up ridiculously big plays when someone makes a bad read.

May be misremembering here, but I recall very few long runs or passes against our D last year..........

Our DL seemed better last year but of course the year is just starting and hopefully will get some of the issues fixed.

Anyway,

Hemby got a good one on us (with a ref assist)

ND got off a big one obviously

Didn't happen often.
