QB Situation

Next year, who will be the back-up QB after Josh Hoover? Is Tyler Cherry ready? What's going on with Jacob Bell? I'm hearing whispers Grant Wilson could come back.

Trinidad Chambliss starred at QB for Mississippi over the last year. Chambliss passed for nearly 4,000 yards with only 3 interceptions. Chambliss received zero Division 1 interest coming out of high school. His offers included the likes of Dayton, Butler, Valparaiso and Ferris State. He ended up at Ferris State and helped them win two Division II National Championships before coming to Mississippi.

I am more than confident that Cignetti has a plan but simply wondering if he might dip into the Division II ranks.

I expect he'll get a G5 starter more talented than Wilson to be the #2, and Wilson will be the 3. Cignetti said in pretty definitive terms that Wilson will be back next season. When he was ODU's starter in '23 he threw for 2,200 yards, 17 TDs, 8 picks, and added 4rushing scores so he's got some experience. From what I've heard Cherry's injury may be career-threatening so we'll have to see what Cig's update on his situation will be.

@hoosiernation1887 Wow, sorry to hear about Cherry. A G5 player makes good sense. It appears most of the the quality D1 talent has been taken out of the portal.

That sucks. I always assumed Cherry would be 100% by next year. As good as they are with knee and ligament damage these days. But I guess I never heard what it really was.

I loved Jacob Bell's hudl tape. And the staff knows QB, so... Maybe he leaps into the 'mobile with some arm' backup role that Alberto had.

Was just thinking. I know he's not good enough to be a starter, he just went down a level IMO leaving UCF, but for a backup, could have done a lot worse than Tayven Jackson. Knows most of the offense, and actually won a game for us last year. A game and a half. Of course, seems he'd rather play.

Cherry was dressed for the National Championship game and warming up on the side lines during timeouts (unless that was Kaiden Turner or another QB).

If Grant Wilson is back that gives you a little leeway with depth. To go Hoover, Cherry, Wilson and Bell. They may go grab another depth piece, we’ll see.

@thehoosierhuddle That's great news about Cherry! I somehow didn't catch this or see it reported at all. Even now, just checked Twitter and didn't see anyone mention this, but I could totally be missing this. I'll put my foot in my mouth and not so liberally share hearsay regarding injuries.

@hoosiernation1887 I didn't put it out intentionally because I couldn't see the name from where we were, but on IU's roster there is only one 14 and it's Turner. However, Turner does not warm up with QBs during Time outs. So has to be Cherry

@thehoosierhuddle - Can you dress when you're not technically on the roster?  I could be wrong but I thought the intention was not to burn his redshirt freshman year?  Or is it considered a new year?

That's what I am trying to figure out. Since it is a new term can he technically dress.
