Favorite thing: when it was time to hoist the trophy, Cig was surrounded by his JMU guys. Not even Fernando was in the front row. For the most part, the JMU guys have been absolutely outstanding for us. But their biggest contribution has probably been coming in and being able to explain the standard that Cig expects and a championship mindset.
Good: gutsy win. You could tell that the defense was gassed at the end and our relative lack of depth across the board was about to be exposed. But big players made big plays and held on.
proud dad moment: Junior had two bold predictions for the game. A defensive/ST score and a 60/40 IU crowd. Nailed them both.
major shout out: we’ve been on the Charlie Becker train since we met him and his parents tailgating last year. That kid has had the most impressive back half of a season and has GOT to be in the conversation for the most clutch WR in college football
bad-ish: it felt like it was too conservative of playcalling for the most part, kind of in the vein of the Iowa game. I distinctly remember a couple times with a moderate 1st down loss followed up by another inside run to set up 3 & like 12. Tough to keep the ball moving like that. It’s only bad-ish because there was also absolutely crazy aggressive playcalling with Mendoza’s QB draw on 4th and medium in the red zone.
looking forward: I’m going to enjoy this for the rest of my life. But I can’t help but think about next year and I think we’ll be an even better team. It doesn’t mean that we’ll have another undefeated run. But I think there will be a very solid core returning across the board and increased depth that let’s them, for example, not need to have starters on special teams and just generally not be as thin across different positions.
I understand the running the ball. Didn't mind it.
But with the ends being so tough to deal with and it seemed like second half almost run blitzing a LB (not sure what the scheme was, going to rewtch later) why not go to those short passes that did well? An outlet pass is nearly as good as a run, to keep clock moving, so is the screen. And if they are pulled in tight to stuff the run, which they had to do, then those plays have a chance.
Some good play calling. Just trouble with that rush, as many predicted, but I didn't believe heading in. Thought we'd solved the pressure issue a bit. I guess that was why the runs, but they came in tighter and stopped those.
IU is the king of college football and you're critiquing their play last night? Yeah, it wasn't perfect, but c'mon.

We stayed committed to the run throughout, and I think he was about trying to keep the D off the field. Miami’s athletes were scary good and were starting to get the better of us as the game progressed. Toney is unreal, and their O line was very stout. We were dragging in the 4th quarter.

Our O line struggled with their atheticism and speed, especially on the outside. They had to get Benson out in the 2nd Q because he simply couldn’t protect, and Ajani had his hands full, too. Smith really had trouble, too, with that level of speed and athleticism. Not a knock on our guys but rather just a testament to how good UM is on D.
@tmft I hear all the people whining about our age, and that 100% contributed to our success, and when you say "we'll be better next year" I'd agree, we're probably going to add better athletic/NFL talent, but chemistry was such a HUGE part of the success of this team, that we could have better athletic talent and not have the year we had this year. Not to mention we're going to be back in a meat grinder next year with OSU, OR, and a resurgent UM and PSU. Enjoy the moment and support our team and program no matter what happens.
