I don't think Alberto has his brother's arm, by which I mean I don't think he (currently at least) is going to be throwing out routes to the wide side of the field with the regularity that Fernando does.

But while Fernando is a fluid runner for a big guy, Alberto has got serious wheels and is/will be a truer dual threat QB.

Every team has to play with the talent they've got and play to their strengths.  There will be tweaks every year.  If the coaching staff thinks they can be productive with Alberto or whoever is behind center, I have no reason to doubt them yet.

Alberto has enough arm. Good arm, not great but not a dink and dunker. I don't think arm strength is far back of Rourke, if any. And I think he has very good accuracy. Possibly has better touch on deep balls than Fernando, since he naturally puts arc on it. He's even more of a run threat, and Fernando can run well.

Alberto could be really good. Not worried at all if he ends up winning the job.

@iureactionary Alberto not have an arm?

i think he has a fine arm...i'm just not sure he has an nfl arm like his brother or even kurtis rourke.

i think sammy's argument is that you don't need fernando's arm if you upgrade a lot of other spots.

my point is that no one really knows what alberto really is except the staff. if they believe he is the guy, i'm good.

i also think that if it was me, knowing the little amount i know, i'd be looking to capitalize on the fernando success for another year and then hopefully turn it over to alberto...but i'm also not in practice.

Ahem, Kurtis Rourke absolutely does have an NFL arm because, well, you know.

am i misunderstanding? i said rourke has an nfl arm...

but if you think rourke's arm is the same as fernando then we weren't watching the same qb's make throws the past two seasons.

Our offense will look a lot different next year. Alberto looks to be significantly faster / better change of direction than Fernando when running, but we havent really had to see him push the ball more than 20 air yards like his brother does every game

My only concern is if he is going to run more frequently, he is a bit light. 200lbs will get you killed running 10x a game as a QB.

If I had to pick... I would probably feel most comfortable seeing if we could get Mensah here. He has round 1 arm talent, and given the year Duke has had, I think he would be willing to come here and get a masters in QB from Cignetti before declaring for the draft at a cheaper NIL deal than what Duke is paying ($3.5m a year)

If we cant get him, G5 vet and roll with Alberto

Looks like I'm the one misunderstanding the way it was written. (You could’ve left off NFL.)

No real need for the, I’m better than you, second paragraph. But perhaps I’m misunderstanding that, too?

Maybe could have used a comma after nfl arm but i think it makes sense that he is saying both have an nfl arm, with fernando's arm being a little stronger.

@cg-paul

syntax was never my strong suit 😆

if anything, i think rourke was undervalued because of his knee injury. i think if you watch some of his ohio tape and then iu, he couldn't put as much on throws at iu as he did at ohio.

One thing I will mention is that as high as we are on Fernando go find posts on this site about him right after the Old Dominion game. Several people were down on Fernando and were questioning if he was any good and now we are arguing he should be the winner of the Heisman. I say that to caution we should all expect some growing pains with Alberto in his first year as a starter and especially in his first few games, but I have no doubt if Cig gives him the keys on day 1 he’s ready. The problem is if we go out and get a portal QB who is expected to start over Alberto he will likely portal which means we have to bring in multiple portal QBs to have adequate depth. As mentioned not having that spring portal doesn’t allow players to compete in the spring and then decide where they stand after competing. The skill positions worry me the least with this coaching staff. The LOS is where I place my focus and concern because our lack of depth there is what has hurt us most these past two seasons.

@hoosierdaddy I don't think we know yet what next year's QB, offense, etc... will look like.  Heck, its very possible Shanahan will take a head coaching gig next year somewhere.  Tons of moving parts to be figured out yet.

I think Mendoza has already done enough that he'll be invited to NYC for the Heisman ceremony.  And he's a consensus top 5 NFL draft pick, and will likely stay there.  These things absolutely open some doors for Cig and his staff to have serious conversations with more elite level QBs that end up in the portal.

Maybe they land an elite level guy, that's not the same type of QB as Mendoza?  Maybe its a Vince Young/Mike Vick type guy?  Maybe they do get another elite gunslinger?  Maybe Shanahan leaves for a head coaching gig, and the new OC and Cig want to run something a little different?  Maybe Alberto is throwing lasers in practice nowadays, and the only reason he isn't starting is because his brother is having such a historically good season?

I think its obvious they're gonna try to bring in a starter level QB in the portal.  How the offense looks will be dictated by who the OC is, who the best QB ends up being between returning guys and new guys.  This year's offense is different than last years, in some ways.  Cig and the staff will maximize whoever the most effective starting QB they have, or can get is.

@iunorth - If Deion leaves Colorado.....whats JuJu Lewis doing? As long as he has patience and wants to learn from the best.....that might be a perfect backup.  He will have some experience but still could RS.

@iunorth Cig has stated before that they build their offense each season around a QBs unique skill set. So, we don’t need to switch OCs to bring in a dual threat guy. He did that at prior stops.  I think they ideally want an elite passer with above average athleticism which may be why we haven’t yet brought in a true dual threat guy with elite athleticism. If the opportunity was presented that a rare dual threat talent wanted to come to IU I have no doubt they would take it.

Reading an article this morning in The Athletic made me think LaNorris Sellers is the perfect guy to come to IU next year.  One year starter. Can improve immensely as a QB. Raise his draft stock.  Alberto backs him up but still (potentially) gets 2 years to start.  I wouldn't blow my budget on Sellers, but if he could be got for the same amount Fernando was, I'd make a run at him.

Hopefully QBs will take a discount here as they focus more on what time here can do for their draft stock.

A by discount I mean 10-20% less than their high bid.

Strongly disagree. Sellers biggest issue (beyond his OL) is that he doesnt read the field well. We would have to run a gimmicky offense with him at the helm

He might get drafted early because of physical traits, but he isnt a very good QB as of this moment

It'll all depend on what he hears about his draft stock after the season.  Some have tabbed him a first round pick, but he's struggled lately, so who knows now.
