Biggest things. They go man coverage at a high rate. Sayin is elite against zone. So can IU exploit big gains against their man? Can we disguise enough to get to Sayin? Ohio state is so good they do things we can’t do. They switch between 3-3-5, 4-2-5, 4-3 and everything in between. Doing it at the snap. Mendoza legs will need to be used probably more than any game. IU is elite but Ohio state is literally on another level. Can we beat them? Yes. With mistakes and turnovers. IU does have better special teams. That just might get it for us. Go Hoosiers!!!!
This is a highly overhyped view of Ohio State. If they were THAT great, Illinois wouldn't have outgained OSU when they played. Illinois was not great, as we showed. OSU hasnt proven anything against any good opponents so any of this logic you laid out is honestly baseless at this point. Take a deep breath.

They haven't played anyone outside of 3 loss Texas who they beat by one score at home. Was also Arch's first real game in a huge atmosphere. OSU is extremely good but they are definitely being over hyped.

I agree. Its not to say they aren't great, but we truly dont know YET if they are top 5 great, let alone far and away elite. They will need to rush good against us and we avg almost a full yard more per carry than OSU....vs a tougher schedule.

You haven't heard from Ohio St fans and the glazing media that Ohio St. has the college versions of the '99 Rams Greatest Show on Turf Offense and the 1985 Bears Monsters of the Midway Defense? Lol
Offensively, the Buckeyes run with 1,000% better talent a mix of Iowa's check down and sit down passing game and Navy's "surprise you" over the top vertical threat passing game once your defense adjusts to the boring short underneath stuff.
Their run game has been super average all season, surprising they bullied the Michigan front 7 in that second half though, didn't see that coming.
Agree with the OP regarding our defense. Very head scratching as to why that's been the case imo.
@hoosieralum07 It is, if that's our game, which I don't think it really is, and I think the last thing we want to do is go away from what has been successful. I know we run the ball well, but it doesn't seem like we go on extended 8+ minute drives often. Just like when you watch an NFL team have rhythm and build a nice lead and then change their approach and watch it evaporate. If we have success running the ball and it chews up clock, fine, but if we get a breakaway and score on a 4 play drive, also fine! Our D has stood up time after time and again, we should lean into who we are.
@openwheel I don't think IU has to play all that much better than we normally do. We just can't play any worse than we normally do. Mendoza hasn't been very good, until the last drives, in all his big tests away from Memorial field this year, and we still found ways to win. If he plays how he did against Iowa and PSU, all game, against OSU, I suspect our deficit will be too big for one of his last minutes heroic efforts. But if we play an overall game similar to the Oregon game, I think we'll have a great chance to win. Not our best effort, but solid, Mendoza getting first downs regularly, defense stuffing the run, etc...
I think we've had a few games where we played below par. But still won.
I think we'll win the game. But I think we can say we played great if we do.
I think Sayin will have some heat on him. I think Mendoza and company are due for some yards.
I'm not a big x and o guy but it seems to me teams (even Purdue) are starting to take chances and attempting to jump the over-the-shoulder throws. Delay and take those downfield and IU might catch OSU off guard and/or easily get Igbinosun to grab and hold on (even more than he does on each and every pass play he defends).
@kkott - I wonder if you are reviewing IU with a fine-toothed comb and being lax on others just due to our undiagnosed IU PTSD. ha But really, the one thing I think IU does really well is go on long drives. I feel like most all of our TD's are a result of long drives. IU's time of possession ranking is 7th in the nation at 33:39. Thats over 3 minutes more per game than last year.

Our 2 biggest games of the season were easily Illinois top 10 at home and top 5 Oregon on the road. Those were also our best performances as well imo. Gives me hope we'll play well on Saturday.
@hooky correct
Iowa and PSU both feasted on the 8-12 yard downfield range
That's my biggest worry.
I know way more about hoops than football, but I think I know enough that those types of completions could be our undoing against this team. Oregon didn't seem to take advantage of it, but the 2 you called out sure did.

As an FYI, D'Angelo Ponds didn't play vs Iowa.
@yothn Not reviewing at all, just off my recollection. Overall I feel like we've scored pretty quickly, but I didn't look it up. My point was, I didn't want us to be something we're not, so if we're controlling the ball and having sustained drives and can do that against OSU, then I agree that would help by keeping their offense off the field.
